Area athletes update …
UNC Greensboro junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury) shot 9-under 63 on Sunday at the USF Invitational at Florida’s Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club and helped the Spartans move into a tie for first place in the event with Florida State.
Dixon’s 63 tied the school record. He leads the tournament by one stroke.
Dixon made an early eagle and was 5-under after five holes on Sunday. Dixon made a bogey on his 16th hole of the day, but he finished his round — birdie-birdie.
Dixon’s previous best for the Spartans was a 68 as a freshman.
UNC Greensboro’s strong team shot 13-under on Sunday.
• Troy Beaver (Salisbury) shot 73-77-77 — 227 in Elon’s first spring tournament at Hilton Head, S.C., and tied for 31st.
• In Davidson’s first spring tournament in Mobile, Ala., Alex Nianouris (Salisbury) shot 81-80-79 — 240 and tied for 69th.
Men’s basketball
K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) had to wait a while longer than expected for Senior Night at GRU Augusta when the Flagler bus broke down on its way to the game.
But Flagler eventually arrived, and Sherrill posted 21 points and six rebounds in an 88-77 victory.
Keshun Sherrill (West) contributed 10 points and four assists for the Jaguars (22-6).
• Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) scored 12 points in a 90-73 loss to Wingate on Saturday.
Moose surpassed 1,000 points for his career in Brevard’s final game. He’s the sixth in school history to score 1,000. Moose averaged 19.8 points this season and was third in the SAC in scoring behind Anderson guard Chandler Hash and Lincoln Memorial big man Vincent Bailey.
• Tevin Stark (A.L. Brown) scored 19 points and had seven rebounds as Sandhills Community College lost 90-85 to Caldwell CC. Stark had some injuries this season but still was named to the Region X All-Freshman team.
• Mars Hill’s Isaiah Cuthbertson (West) had 11 points and six rebounds in the Lions’ season-ending loss to Lenoir-Rhyne. The junior finished third in the league in rebounding (9.3) and shooting percentage (62.4).
Malik Ford (North Rowan) and T.J. Bates (North) played for Thomasville Prep this season. Both should have an opportunity to play college ball next year.
• Oshon West (North) had seven points and three rebounds for eighth-ranked Louisburg in Saturday’s 96-73 win against fourth-ranked Richard Bland.
College baseball
Army’s Jon Crucitti (West) had three hits, scored three runs and stole his seventh base of the season in a 16-1 win against Albany on Sunday in a game played on Campbell’s diamond. Crucitti also had two hits Saturday and is batting .371.
Appalachian State beat Michigan again — only this time it was in baseball. Preston Troutman (East Rowan) helped the Mountaineers win 4-1 on Saturday with a run-scoring single.
• UNC Pembroke’s Brett Huffman (West) went 2-for-4 and scored twice in 9-6 loss to Georgia College on Saturday. Huffman produced a clutch, run-scoring double Sunday as UNCP ralied to beat Georgia College 9-8.
• In East Carolina’s 3-2 win against Ohio State on Sunday, Eric Tyler (South Rowan) got his first college RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Tyler also cut down a runner trying to steal in the first.
• Tyler Kowalczyk (South) smacked a two-run double as Wheeling Jesuit beat West Virginia State 12-5 on Saturday for its first win of the season.
• Chase Hathcock (East Rowan) went 1-for-3 for Lenoir-Rhyne in Saturday’s 5-1 loss to Catawba. Hathcock has started six games for the Bears and is batting .263.
• Liberty’s Nick Boswell (Davie) had his first college hit on Saturday in a 13-0 win against Ball State.
College softball
Elon’s Chelsea White (East) won her sixth game on Sunday, throwing a complete game in a 9-4 victory against Presbyterian. White pitched a 2-0 shutout against Dayton on Saturday.
• Belmont Abbey’s Samantha Jacobs (North) pitched five strong innings in a 3-1 win against Davis & Elkins on Sunday. Kaitlyn Jones (South) had two RBIs for the Crusaders.
• Guilford’s Steffi Sides (East) doubled home a run in the Quaker’s sweep of Salem on Sunday. Guilford is 11-1, best start in program history.
• Campbell’s Ericka Nesbitt (East) had two more hits in a 3-0 win against Villanova on Sunday. Nesbitt is batting .415.
Women’s basketball
Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) had a career game as Gardner-Webb beat Charleston Southern 74-62 on Saturday.
Heilig shot 9-for-11 from the field, scored 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Doreen Richardson (Salisbury) also was a factor for the Bulldogs with seven points, three rebounds and two assists. Gardner-Webb is the No. 5 seed for the Big South tourney.
• Radford’s Ayana Avery (West) made four more 3-pointers and scored 16 points in a 68-60 Big South loss to league champ High Point on Saturday.
Radford is seeded ninth for the Big South tourney and plays on Tuesday.
• Freshman Shay Steele (West) helped Morehead State win 81-74 on Senior Night against Tennessee Tech. Steele had eight points, six rebounds and five blocks. The five blocks were a season-high for Steele.
It was the last game of the season for Steele, who averaged 3.8 points and 3.6 rebounds and led the team with 27 blocks. Steele shot well — almost 55 percent from the floor and almost 72 percent from the line.
