Rowan County wrestlers competed in first-round matches in the state tournament on Thursday.
South’s Logan Durham won by pin at 106. South’s Tyler Hall won a major decision at 126. East’s Wyatt Blume won a decision at 152. Carson’s Brandon Sloop won by forfeit at 160. East’s Shiheem Saunders won a decision at 170. Carson’s Alex Lyles won a decision at 285.
East’s Sam Cornacchione and Max Wall and West’s Zac Ridenhour and Thomas Current dropped first-round matches Thursday.

A.L. Brown had four of five wrestlers win first-round matches Thursday in the state tournament.
At 106, Jayquon McEntyre won a 3-2 decision. At 120, Avery Clinding won by pin. At 126, Nicholas Sexton won by pin. At 220, Keechan Ware advanced by forfeit.
At 138, Isaiah Johnson lost an 11-7 decision.
• Davie’s three wrestlers won in the first round.
Alex Gobble (182), Jack Robertson (195) and Parker Correll (220) won decisions.
Cox Mill’s boys trailed by six late in a Thursday SPC semifinal at Carson but scored 12 straight points and beat Hickory Ridge 70-64. Matt Morgan hit two 3-pointers and had a three-point play during the comeback.
Cox Mill plays at Carson for the boys championship tonight at 8. East Rowan battles South Rowan for the girls title at 6 p.m.
• In the CCC, North Rowan’s girls play East Davidson for the title at 6 tonight at Lexington, and the North-Lexington boys championship matchup follows at 7:30.
Corriher-Lipe’s girls won 40-38 in overtime against Mooresville on a shot by Chrishea Massey. Janiya Downs had the assist on Massey’s game-winner and scored 22 points. Rhianna Kimmer scored 14 for the Yellow Jackets.
Somer Wilson scored 15 to lead the Imps, and Allie Noble had seven.
• Corriher-Lipe’s girls won 36-31 against Erwin. Downs scored 16 points, while Kimmer had five.
Zynoria Winford scored 12 for the Eagles, and Laura Weinsel had six.
• West Rowan Middle’s boys (3-3) won 42-34 against China Grove. Robert Caldwell led the Bulldogs with nine points, and DeVae Vaughn and Cole Hales scored eight apiece. Jacob Perez and Anthony Chance scored six points, and Payne Stolsworth added five.
Samuel Wordsworth had six rebounds. Vaughn blocked five shots. Perez had three steals.
Jarius Bates had 15 for the Red Devils, and Andrew Jones scored seven,
• China Grove’s boys won 54-32 against Southeast.
Andrew Jones led the Red Devils with 16 points. Davis Tadlock scored 14, Jeron Hines had seven, Dylan Johnson scored six, and Jeff Bramblett had five.
Josh Lee scored 10 for the Patriots. Johnathon White and Harrison Doby scored five apiece.
• China Grove’s girls defeated Southeast 28-19.
Zoie Lee scored 11, and Karly Wood had eight for the Red Devils.

• West’s girls won 30-8 against China Grove.
Chantal Robinson scored 20 for the Bulldogs (2-4). Hannah Pratt had six points for West.
• Erwin’s boys won 50-28 against China Grove.
Christian Bennett scored 17 for the Eagles (5-2). Gabe Hinceman scored 13, and Hunter Eagle added eight.
Bramblett led the Red Devils with nine points.
• Erwin’s boys won 56-20 against Corriher-Lipe.
Bennett scored 15, and Hinceman had 13 for the Eagles (6-2).
Eagle, Ethan Gullett and Hill Fowler scored six each.
Kodie Connor had seven for the Yellow Jackets.
• Knox’s girls won 34-15 against Erwin.
Bryanna Troutman had 13 points for the Trojans. Mikayla Dillard scored eight and Taccora Robinson scored six. Jineka Glenn led the defensive.
• Knox’s girls won 32-22 against Mooresville.
Troutman scored 15 for the unbeaten Trojans (5-0).
The Winston-Salem State-Johnson C. Smith game that was suspended on Wednesday will resume on Friday at 2 p.m. in Charlotte.
The teams are tied at 76 and are headed to overtime.
Livingstone is at Winston-Salem State on Saturday.
Action on Wednesday was interrupted due to a light fixture that was broken during the final seconds of regulation.
Brett Huffman (West Rowan) had two RBIs for 15th-ranked UNC Pembroke in an 11-1 win against Barton.

Catawba’s women’s lacrosse team lost 12-1 to Mount Olive in their opener on Thursday. Kim McConnery scored for the Indians. Bethany Davis made 13 saves.
Pfeiffer won 8-1 against Catawba’s women’s tennis team on Wednesday at Johnson Tennis Center.
Pfeiffer is 3-0. Catawba, which got a singles win from Alli Prior, is 6-6.
Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) had 12 points and seven assists and K.J. Sherrill had 10 points as GRU Augusta won 80-63 against Lander on Wednesday.
GRU Augusta is 21-4 and ranked fourth in the Southeast Region.

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls went undefeated in conference play in the regular season and won the CCISAA tournament.
Sacred Heart had a first-round bye.
Sacred Heart won 33-17 against Salisbury Academy in a quarterfinal, beat Winston-Salem Christian 34-31 in a semifinal and won the championship game against Burlington Christian.
Julia Honeycutt, Mary McCullough, Sara Nguyen and Leah Wyrick led the Dolphins in the title game. Honeycutt scored 14 points, McCullough scored 10, Mary Sobataka had seven points, and Wyrick pulled down seven rebounds.
Other team members contributing to the tournament victory were Nguyen, Lauren Denhard, Elizabeth Ann Graeber, and Carsyn Parrott.
Honeycutt was tournament MVP. McCullough, Wyrick and Sobataka, were named all-tournament.
Leah Ann Honeycutt was the head coach, and and Lisa Sobataka assisted.
Sacred Heart boys
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys finished their season as CCISAA Western Conference champs (17-3) and tournament runner-ups.
Sacred Heart won 38-18 against Salisbury Academy in a quarterfinal. Michael Childress scored 18 points. Will Taylor had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Eric Turnbull scored seven.
Sacred Heart beat Winston-Salem Christian 40-30 in a semifinal to avenge an earlier loss.
Childress scored 22 points. Taylor had 11 points, and Jack Fisher added 10 rebounds. Henry Holman led the defense.
Sacred Heart lost 50-37 to Burlington Christian in the tournament final. Burlington Christian hit seven 3-pointers. Childress scored 12 points, while Taylor had 11. Childress,
Taylor and Holman were named all-tournament. Steve Fisher was the head coach. Craig Turnbull assisted.
Registration is open through March 22 for soccer and flag football at the South Rowan YMCA.The leagues are coed and are for grades K-8. Games start in mid-April.
Girls middle school volleyball registration for grades 6-8 will end March 1.

Spencer Little league will be holding tryouts at the 8th Street Ballpark in Spencer on Saturday, Feb. 22, fom 9-3 for boys and girls, ages 4-15.
