Ayana Avery (West Rowan) hit a game-winning shot for the Radford women on Thursday in the Highlanders’ 63-62 Big South Conference win at Coastal Carolina.
Avery shot 7-for-11 and was 4-for-4 on 3-point attempts. She has 70 3-pointers this season, a school record.
Avery had 19 points and eight rebounds and played 40 minutes without a turnover.
• Former Statesville star Janitsha Williams scored 21 points for Wingate in Thursday’s 68-63 win against Coker. Wingate (14-3, 10-3) leads the SAC.
K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 24 points and Keshun Sherrill (West) had 16 as Georgia Regents University rolled 91-78 against Armstrong. The Jaguars are 16-3 and 9-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
• Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) scored 21 points in Thursday’s SAC loss to Lincoln Memorial.
• Mars Hill’s Isaiah Cuthbertson (West) had 17 points and 12 rebounds in a SAC loss to Tusculum on Thursday.
• Thomasville Prep got eight points each from Malik Ford (North Rowan) and T.J. Bates (North) but lost to Davidson County Community College 108-82 on Thursday.
Outfielder Dylan Goodman (South Rowan) and pitchers Jesse Park (Carson) and Travis Holshouser (North Rowan) are on the Pfeiffer roster.
The Falcons open Saturday against Mars Hill in Florence, S.C. Pitcher Tyler Sides (A.L. Brown) is on the Mars Hill roster.
Former Appalachian State football coach Jerry Moore headlines the latest Hall of Fame class for the Southern Conference.
Moore (215-87 at ASU) is the winningest coach in Southern Conference history. Overall, he won 242 games.
Catawba’s women were picked seventh in the preseason SAC poll, while the men were picked eighth.
The favorites are Wingate’s men and women.
Catawba’s Liz Renteria is a preseason first-team All-SAC pick, Sloan Kessler is second team.
Catawba’s women tied for third in the first SAC women’s lacrosse poll. Queens is rated as the league favorite.
Catawba’s Meredith Jones, Ebony Mills, Kelsey Perusse and Bethany Davis are preseason All-SAC picks. Alyssa Corace and Chelsea Sorenson are on the second team.
• In the first men’s SAC lacrosse poll, Catawba’s John Scheich, Gage Mason and Daniel Rew are preseason first-team picks. Catawba was picked third. Queens and Mars Hill tied for first.
Eight schools will field men’s teams.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot a 6-under 66 in Thursday’s second round in the eGolf Florida Tour’s Citrus Open to move into contention. The final round of the 54-hole event is today. Adams is four shots off the pace.
Lee Trevino and Hale Irwin are among the previous winners of the tournament.
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys won 47-33 against Concordia of Conover.
Michael Childress had 12 points and 11 assists. Will Taylor also scored 12. Jack Fisher had 11 points and five rebounds. Eric Turnbull hit two 3-pointers and scored 10. Henry Holman and Melvin Bonilla were defensive standouts.
Sacred Heart finishes the regular season today at home against Statesville Christian. The girls start the doubleheader at 4 p.m.
East Rowan Diamond Sports spring baseball and softball registration will be held February 25, 27, 28 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the East Rowan High cafeteria. The final on-site registration is on March 1 from 9-11 a.m. in the East cafeteria. Parents can also register online at www.eastrowandiamondsports.com beginning Saturday.
Baseball fees are: Majors- $100; Minors $90;Coach Pitch $80; T-Ball $70.
Softball fees are: 12U and 10U $90; 8U $80.
The 1A-2A East, 3A East and 3A West swimming regionals have been pushed back to Saturday or Monday.
Six of the eight diving regionals were pushed back by the weather from Friday to either Saturday or Monday.
The 3A Central Regional in Greensboro, which includes three South Rowan divers, will be held Saturday.
The Shamrock Run through the heart of historic Mocksville will be held for the 26th year on Saturday, March 1.
The event includes a 5K Run, a competitive walk, a fun walk, a 10K run and a Tot’s Trot.
