MOCKSVILLE (AP) — Davie County Sheriff Andy Stokes says he accidentally shot his deputy after a suspect began firing during a standoff Wednesday.
Stokes says the deputy is expected to recover, but a police dog shot by the suspect in a Mocksville home was killed.
Stokes says he was firing Wednesday night so his officers could get away from the suspect when one of the bullets ricocheted and hit deputy Chris Fleming in the shoulder.
Investigators said they were trying to arrest 19-year-old Nicholas Tilley on armed robbery and kidnapping charges. He now faces charges of attempted murder and killing an animal officer for the death of the sheriff’s office Russian Shepherd named “Gorky.”
It wasn’t known if Tilley had a lawyer.
