SHS girls lose 66-30

Salisbury’s girls basketball team lost 66-30 to Asheboro in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day game played at Southeast Guilford’s new gym on Monday afternoon.
Asheboro (14-5) is a good 3A team and had little trouble with the Hornets, who lost their seventh straight.
Salisbury stayed with the Comets the first eight minutes, but the second quarter, when Asheboro outscored SHS 18-7, proved decisive. Asheboro led 33-19 at halftime and blew the game open in the third quarter.
Freshman Tyzarea Alexander matched her career high with 13 points to lead the Hornets.
Kinci Smith scored 20 to spark the Comets.
Salisbury (5-12) hasn’t tasted victory since it beat Carson in the opening round of the Sam Moir Christmas Classic.
The Hornets return to action Friday with a a CCC home game against West Davidson. Both teams are 0-3 in the CCC.

The McCanless Couples played on Sunday with a Captain’s Choice format.
The team of Ricky Honeycutt, Harry Owens and Phyllis Myers took first place. The team of Sharon Miller, Don Goodnight, David Huneycutt and Susan Houston placed second. Treva Honeycutt and Walt and Kim Kincaid took third place.
Goodnight won closest to the pin, while Myers won longest putt.
• China Grove’s Carley Cox tied for fifth in the 16-18 girls division in a Tarheel Youth Golf Association event in Southern Pines.
Cox shot 94.
• East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly shot 84 and finished 16th in the boys 14-15 division.
Already at the top of the Division II qualifying list for the indoor 400 meters, Livingstone’s Quanera Hayes solidified her position as one of D-II’s top sprinters with three wins in two meets over the weekend.
Hayes’ weekend started at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn. She won the 200 in 23.99 seconds and the 400 in 54.27. On Sunday at the Winston-Salem Invitational, Hayes won in 24.24.
Oshon West (North Rowan) scored eight points for Louisburg in Saturday’s 61-57 win against Patrick Henry Community College.
• K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Augusta in a 56-55 loss to Georgia College on Monday.
Maury Holt scored 15 points as Lexington’s boys crushed High Point Andrews 84-49 on Monday.
