Catawba’s men’s basketball team put five players in double figures and outlasted Newberry to claim a thrilling 98-96 double-overtime victory in SAC action on Wednesday at Goodman Gym.
Catawba (3-8, 3-4) avenged an early-season loss to the Wolves (8-3, 4-3), who are coached by former Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis.
Newberry twice sent the game to extra periods with late 3-pointers, but a final 3-point shot from Demarkus Smith for the win fell short and Catawba claimed the two-point win.
Gerald Evans had tied the game with six seconds left in regulation and Dondray Walker had pulled the Wolves even with 17 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
In the second overtime, Jalen Byrd put the Indians up 95-92 with 2:36 left and his steal led to a free throw from Kijuan Arrington to keep Catawba on top at 96-94 with 1:21 to go.
Cole Birchfield tied the game on a pair of free throws with 58 seconds remaining, but Arrington sank a jumper with 25 second to play for the winning points before the last-second miss from Newberry.
Arrington scored 25 points for Catawba, hitting on 8-of-12 from the field and going 9-of-12 at the line.
Tyrece Little posted a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Reggie Perkins and Vismantas Marijosius (North Hills) added 16 each and Byrd tallied 12.
Smith went 9-for-21 to lead Newberry with 23 points. Walker followed with 18 points and Brandon Taylor scored 15 points with six rebounds. Brunes Charles also reached double figures for the Wolves with 12 points.
Catawba shot 49 percent and won the boards 57-47.
Newberry forced Catawba into eight more turnovers, but the Wolves shot 39 percent.
The Indians led virtually the entire first half, building as much as an 11-point margin. Catawba connected on seven three-pointers in the first half and made 11 for the game. The Wolves hit on just 32 percent in the first half.
Overtime is nothing new to the two teams when playing at Goodman Gym. It marked the fourth time in the past five years the outcome was decided in extra time. Newberry had won a double- overtime affair back on Jan. 23, 2010.
Catawba tied a team record with 13 blocked shots in the win. Little had four blocks and Troy Warren posted three.
Catawba is on the road Saturday, traveling to Brevard for a 4 p.m. game.
Brevard whipped Tusculum on Wednesday, with former Carson star Darius Moose careering with 33 points and 18 rebounds.

Catawba’s women’s basketball team fell out of a tie for first place in the SAC on Wednesday with a 62-57 setback against Newberry at Goodman Gym.
Newberry (7-4, 3-4) got a double-double from Haylee Lepaio to top the Indians (7-4, 5-2).
Lepaio had 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and added a dozen rebounds in the win for Newberry. Tasia Holdorf followed with 12 points and seven boards, while Zara Pearson tallied 10 points, all in the first half.
Chloe Bully and Mallary Clay each scored 14 points to pace the Indians. Bully added six assists and had a pair of steals. Catawba struggled from the field, making just 32.3 percent and was outrebounded 46-36. Newberry shot 46 percent.

Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team lost 80-78 to Belmont Abbey on the road on Wednesday.
Mike Smith scored 29 for the Falcons, and AJ Clark had 20.
Chris Davis led the Crusaders with 22 points.
• Pfeiffer’s women lost 67-47 to Belmont Abbey.
Alexis Stallard scored 23 for the Falcons. McKenzie Owens had 21 for BA.
Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher and Grace Yatawara and South Rowan’s Davis Richards were named as All-State golfers by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association. All three were second-team picks.
• Sixty golfers braved cold temperatures for a New Year’s kickoff event at Corbin Hills.

Livingstone linebacker Kenneth White was named to the 2013 Don Hansen Football Gazette Super Region 1 third team. White was Livingstone’s leading tackler, averaging 19 stops per game.
• FootballScoop named Stanford’s Mike Bloomgren as its Offensive Line Coach of the Year.
Bloomgren was an assistant coach for three seasons at Catawba from 2002-04, serving as offensive line coach for three seasons. He was the running game coordinator in 2003 and co-offensive coordinator in 2004.
Stanford ranked 22nd nationally in rushing offense this season, primarily as a running team.
Stanford rushed 584 times for 2,904 yards and 30 touchdowns. The Cardinal achieved 81 runs of 10 yards or more and 25 carries of 20 yards or more.
Stanford threw the ball 311 times in its 14 games and allowed only 16 sacks, Most impressively, the Stanford offensive line was called for only two holding penalties the entire season.
In its game with Oregon, Stanford held the ball for more than 42 minutes and rushed 66 times for 274 yards and two touchdowns .
Stanford senior guard David Yankey earned consensus All-America honors.
Bloomgren will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention, which will be held on Jan. 12-15 in Indiana.
The Post reported on Dec. 29 that Jerry Sands had been waived by the Pittsburgh Pirates and claimed by the Tampa Bay Rays, but his stay with Tampa Bay was brief.
On Tuesday, the Rays announced that they claimed lefty reliever Pedro Figueroa, who had been waived by the Oakland Athletics, and designated Sands for assignment. Sands had been placed on the 40-man roster by the Rays, but the Rays replaced him with Figueroa.
Freshman outfielder Greg Tonnesen (Carson) is on the Campbell roster. The Camels will open their season at home on Feb. 14 against La Salle.
