SALISBURY — Davie County’s Asiah Peterson caught a pass in the post, made a quick spin move and put the ball in the hole.
Putting the ball in the hole is a feat that proved much more routine for Davie than for South Rowan on Thursday, and the Raiders were walloped 41-18 in a first-round game in the Moir Classic.
South had one of the lowest-scoring efforts in school history and scored the fewest points it’s put up since an 80-16 loss to Salisbury in 2009.
The school record for fewest points scored is 15 and was set in the 1965-66 season.
South played without Avery Locklear, who was averaging 21 per game when she broke a hand. Caroline Hubbard, out for the season with a broken collarbone, also was on the bench with a clipboard.
“Now with Avery out, we really miss Caroline a lot,” South coach Jarrod Smith said. “Davie just had more guards than we did. We’re struggling and searching now, and there are a lot of things we’re not doing well.”
The numbers were ugly. South shot 16.7 percent from the field and went 1-for-10 from the foul line.
South was 5-2 when Locklear got hurt, and that made the Raiders the No. 3 seed for the tourney. Now they’re 5-4.
No. 6 seed Davie (4-5) also was shorthanded, with Ivey Carney sidelined by a concussion and leading scorer Aubrianna Peebles sitting out the second game of a two-game penalty for an ejection.
Davie gets 20 points per game from those two, but Peterson stepped up with 12 points and Makayla Bohannon and Ashlyn Hampton added eight apiece.
“Everyone did a good job and everyone did what we asked them to do,” Davie’s first-year coach Dave Ruemenapp said. “And we finally played well in the first quarter. We have not been getting off to good starts offensively, so that was nice to see.”
It was basically over after a quarter, with DC on top 18-2.
Down 26-7 at halftime, South got buckets from Beth Ann Martin and Sylvetta Bost to open the third quarter, but the War Eagles answered that mini-run and won in a breeze.
“Without Avery, we haven’t learned how to pick up that extra slack yet on offense or defense,” Martin said. “But we’ll learn, and this tournament will help us learn.”
