CONCORD — Six students from Cannon School attended the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in National Harbor, Md, Dec. 5-7.
Hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Student Diversity Leadership Conference is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of Upper School student leaders from around the country. Participants examine issues of social justice, develop effective cross-cultural communication skills, practice expression through the arts, and learn networking principles and strategies.
Now in its 12th year, the Student Diversity Leadership Conference encourages students to apply the leadership principles they develop within their own communities after the conference.
The students in attendance were junior Derek Gordon of Salisbury, junior Harrison Barone of Cornelius, sophomore Sydney Green of Davidson, junior Jordan Wallace of Charlotte, sophomore Maya Sturgies of Charlotte and junior Joelle Parkin of Charlotte.
CONCORD — On Dec. 11, Cannon students mobilized to give underprivileged children in the Concord and Lake Norman areas a holiday season to remember.
Cannon students ages 4 to 18 donated more than 930 new, unused gifts for needy children of their own ages and genders during the school’s annual Project Wrap-In community service project. Younger students, paired with older buddies, did all the wrapping in classrooms and gave the presents to five charitable organizations that provide underprivileged children with presents for the holidays.
Representatives from Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army, Church of God Children’s Home, Cannon YMCA and Logan Day Care were present to receive the gifts during a festive all-school assembly, complete with performances by the school’s jazz band and dance troupes.
Project Wrap-In began five years ago as a small community service project envisioned by Bethany Corbin, a 2008 Cannon alumna, and has grown into an event that students look forward to every December.
