SALISBURY — Some records happen by accident.
The last thing East Rowan’s Danny Misenheimer expected to transpire in Mustang Land during his coaching tenure was a school record in the passing game, but you never know.
Misenheimer’s offense is the split-back veer, which is designed to include roughly five play-action passes per game, but both Wyrick brothers, quarterback Samuel and receiver Seth, broke school records that were almost carved in granite in Granite Quarry.
Seth’s 66 receptions topped a Johnny Yarbrough record that had been on the books since 1969.
Samuel’s 1,766 passing yards broke a C.M. Yates record that had stood since 1970, and while he was at it, he also set an East total offense mark with 2,176 yards.
“We lost (star running back) Calvin Edwards, and that hurt us,” Misenheimer said . “We’re still a running team, a running program. Throwing the ball — that’s not really us — but the Wyricks did a great job when we had to throw more than we really like to. Sam had a season like Austin McNeill had for Carson last year. Carson had to throw more than they wanted to, and Austin put up some pretty big numbers.”
Samuel threw 247 times and had 20 or more pass attempts six times. He completed almost half his passes and threw for a county-leading 20 touchdowns.
Seth had four 100-yard receiving games and finished with county-leading totals of 924 yards and 12 TD catches.
The Wyricks are juniors who have played two varsity seasons.
Seth will enter his senior year 19th on the county’s all-time receiving list with 1,326 career yards. Only four players in county history have reached the 2,000 milestone.
Samuel will enter the 2014 season 16th on the county’s all-time list with 3,224 passing yards. Only six players in county history have thrown for 4,000 yards.
Still, it’s not like Misenheimer will be seeking records and milestones next season. His goal is for the Mustangs to get back to the sort of run-run-run, win-win-win success they had in 2012.
The Wyricks will be just fine with that. They’ll be the first to tell you that yards don’t mean all that much unless they happen in victories.
The Wyricks were East’s only offensive representatives on the all-county team.
North has four all-county offensive players. Carson and West got three apiece.

Jareke Chambers, North, Jr. RB — Unless you’ve been stuck on an elevator for three months, you know all about Chambers. He broke school records with 2,018 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns and was a landslide winner of the player of the year award.
Josh Cozart, North, Sr. OL — The vocal, 278-pound center was the hub of the most prolific offense in school history (39.4 points per game).
Alexis Archie, North, Jr. QB — Archie missed four games with injury but still threw for 1,457 yards and 16 TDs, with only six interceptions. He was a powerful runner and scored nine TDs.
Sakil Harrison, North, Jr. WR — Harrison was second in the county receiving stats (48 catches, 790 yards, eight TDs) and made good use of his size (6-3, 183) as a tough downfield blocker.
Cody Rodriguez, Carson, Sr. OL — Carson’s left guard was a big reason the Cougars topped 300 rushing yards against SPC foes three straight weeks in one stretch.
“We had a new offense he had to learn, but he did a great job,” Carson coach Joe Pinyan said. “He was the senior anchor of our o-line.”
Brandon Sloop, Carson, Jr. RB — A workhorse, Sloop plowed for 1,127 yards on 228 carries and scored 11 TDs. He’ll enter his senior season with 3,457 rushing yards and already ranks seventh in county history.
Darren Isom, Carson, Jr. RB — A physically imposing guy, Isom was a big play waiting to happen. He had eight rushing TDs, four receiving TDs and key kickoff returns.
Harrison Baucom, West, Jr. QB/P — Baucom rushed for 559 yards and 13 TDs and threw for 1,034 yards and eight TDs. He was most outstanding as a punter, averaging 40-plus yards per kick.
Daisean Reddick, West, Sr. RB — The latest in a long line of fine West tailbacks, he rushed for 1,161 yards and scored 15 TDs, despite missing two games with injury. He finished his career fifth in West history with 2,477 rushing yards.
Chris Hassard, West, Sr. OL — He was called on to play left tackle, right tackle and right guard and was very good at all three positions.
Honorable Mention: Salisbury back Tim Rhodes was instrumental in his team’s only two wins. He had 181 of his 499 rushing yards and four of his seven TDs in those victories. … Massive North lineman Nick Leverett had 49 pancake blocks.
