West Rowan Middle School’s Zach Owen, 13, was chosen to play in the Offense-Defense Youth All-American Bowl that will be held in Orlando on New Year’s Day.
A defensive lineman, Owen competed in an Offense-Defense camp last summer and was chosen to participate from a pool of thousands of athletes.
Owen has been chosen three years in a row to play in Offense-Defense all-star games.
The South Rowan girls swim team defeated Concord and Carson at the J. Fred Corriher Jr. YMCA.
Winners for the Raiders were Leslie Franks (50 free), Casey Pruitt (200 IM, 500 free) and Faith Casswell (100 fly, 100 back). Casswell, Franks, Pruitt and Taylor Kluttz won the 200 medley relay. Kluttz, Samantha Kennerly, Sabrina Broadway and Franks won the 200 freestyle relay.
Ashlee Wagoner led the Cougars with a third in the 200 IM.
South’s boys fell to Concord but defeated Carson in the same meet. Concord swept the men’s events. Standouts for the Raiders included Steven Lyons (second in the 100 breast) and Stetson Johnston (second in the 100 back).

• South and Carson took to the pool again to compete in the annual Raider Relays. The exhibition held at the J. Fred Corriher Jr. YMCA, consisted entirely of relays in which alumni and coaches take part. The Raiders won the 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, 200 corkscrew relay, 200 butterfly relay, 200 medley relay, 800 medley relay, 200 breaststroke relay, 400 IM relay, 400 freestyle relay and 8×50 freestyle relay.
Carson took the 200 T-Shirt relay and the 200 backstroke relay.
• South competes again on Jan. 2 against Central Davidson at the Corriher YMCA.
South Rowan divers took part in the Carolina Winter Invitational at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics Center.
Brittany Luckey led the Raiders with a 13th-place finish in the high school women’s 1-meter springboard (six dives). Madyson Campbell finished 15th and Katie Carlton finished 16th.
The Sam Moir Christmas Classic will be held Dec. 26-28 at Catawba.

East Rowan’s girls and North Rowan’s boys are seeded No. 1 and have opening-round byes on Thursday, the 26th.
There will be six games played on each of the three days, culminating with a girls championship game at 6 on Saturday and a boys championship game at 8.

Jimmy Greene, Sarah VanBuskirk, Brad Peninger and Jimmy Roberts coached the team. The Bulldogs were 8-5-1. Thirteen players made the honor roll.
Community School of Davidson beat Salisbury Academy 48-30. Ben Coulter had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Jaguars, and Sam Combs scored five points.
The Jaguars return to action on Jan. 7 against Statesville Montessori.
• Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls lost 20-17 to Summit School in Winston-Salem.
Lila Harry scored eight points for the Jaguars.
WICHITA, Kan. — Darius Carter scored 19 points to help No. 11 Wichita State survive Jeremy Ingram’s 37-point night in a 77-66 win over North Carolina Central late Sunday night.
Cleanthony Early had 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Shockers (12-0) extended the best start in school history. Ron Baker scored 15 points for Wichita State and Fred VanVleet added 14.
North Carolina Central (7-3) was outrebounded 37-22, including a 15-3 disparity on the offensive glass. Ingram was 12 of 21 from the floor and 7 of 13 from the 3-point line. He scored 27 points in the second half.
Ingram had a four-point play 16 seconds into the half and drew another foul on Cotton while scoring less than two minutes later.
When Ingram hit a 3-pointer with 16:59 remaining to get the Eagles within 44-36, he already had 10 points in the half and 20 in the game.
and had cut Wichita State’s 16-point halftime lead in half.
The Eagles did not score again for four minutes but stayed within striking distance. Ingram scored five straight points, and the Shockers led 54-46 with 8:21 remaining.
It was still an eight-point game when Early hit a transition 3-pointer and Baker followed with a steal that led to VanVleet’s layup that made it 66-53 Wichita State with 4:57 to play.
But Ingram continued to make it interesting. His deep 3 with 3:10 remaining pulled North Carolina Central within 68-60.
The Eagles had it down to seven, 70-63, when Wichita State patiently worked the shot clock and found Baker in the corner. He swished a 3-pointer for a 73-63 lead with 1:40 remaining.
When the Shockers forced a steal on the other end, leading to Early’s dunk, Wichita State could finally relax.
Ingram kept the Eagles in the game early. His 3-pointer with 7:06 remaining in the half gave him 10 points and cut Wichita State’s lead to 21-19.
The Shockers then took control with a 15-0 run. Baker started the spurt with a 3-pointer, and Carter scored six of the points on two dunks and a short floater.
Wichita State’s run pushed the lead to 36-19 with 2:22 left in the half. Chadrack Lufile’s putback to beat the buzzer gave the Shockers a 40-24 halftime advantage.
The Shockers outrebounded North Carolina Central 23-11 in the half. Carter and Early each scored 11 first-half points for Wichita State.
