Fire officials say they are looking at a vehicle as the cause of a Jibsail Road fire that destroyed a home Wednesday afternoon.
Homeowner Wanda Hutchens was baking cookies when her dog alerted her to the fire. She opened a door leading to the garage and saw smoke. She tried to call 911, but the phone line was damaged due to the fire.
Neighbors called 911 and firefighters arrived at the home, located in the 100 block of Jibsail Road, just off Mainsail Road, on High Rock Lake.
Deborah Horne with the Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office said Thursday fire investigators were not able to rule out a vehicle as the cause. Three vehicles were parked in the garage and the fire is still under investigation, she said. Half a dozen fire departments responded to the two-alarm blaze, which gutted the home.
Hutchens, who lives at the home with her husband Ken, was able to get out with their two dogs. She had minor injuries to her arm and wrist. Emergency medical personnel checked her at the scene.
