For several years now, Bob Lewis has made a contribution to the Christmas Happiness Fund, he said, simply because he believes in what it represents.
“I’m keenly aware of the need that’s in our community and the truth of the matter this is a poor county and there is great need. That’s why I give because I believe in it,” Lewis said.
Christmas Happiness contributions are collected at the Salisbury Post. The donations are listed in the paper each day. The Salvation Army of Rowan County distributes those contributions to area families in need. Families receive a gift card to buy Christmas presents for each child who qualifies.
Lewis gave his contribution in honor of his Wednesday morning breakfast group, a group of 10-12 men who began meeting years ago to discuss the important issues facing Salisbury.
The group was started by then Post editor Steve Bouser and was comprised of bankers, lawyers and other businessmen. The men meet at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, where one of the hospital’s doctors is part of the group.
“We are basically a group that we learn from one another and we talk and listen. We’re not an activist group. We don’t pick sides,” he said.
He also gave a donation in honor of a Wednesday night pool group. The men gather at his house to fellowship and shoot pool. The men have been gathering to shoot pool for 10 years now.
Bring contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to The Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, NC 28145-4639.
Make checks payable to the Christmas Happiness Fund and indicate how you wish your donations to be listed. Please write legibly to ensure that donations can be listed accurately.
