The family of Marcus Kauffman, the western Rowan County man shot during a Dec. 2 burglary at his home, says “there is very little hope” for him medically and that his survival would be a clear miracle.
An update posted this afternoon on the Facebook page “Praying for Marco” says this:
“Today the doctors are requesting that a test be done to check for any brain activity. If there is none, they would like to proceed with removing Marco from life support.
“When the accident happened, many prayed that Marco would be healed in a way that would be a clear miracle. That things would happen in a way that all would stand back and know it was GOD, and God alone.
“Now would certainly be the time for something like that, since medically speaking there is very little hope.
“As a family, we are asking God to reveal His will for Marco’s life through the results of the test.”
On Wednesday, the site said Kauffman’s condition had “worsened drastically” over the previous 24 hours.
A volunteer firefighter at the Scotch Irish department who goes by the nickname Marco, the 25-year-old Kauffman and his pregnant wife Maryann returned to their home on Chenault Road near Cleveland the morning of Dec. 2 to find a blue car near their home with the hood up.
Kauffman took his wife to a neighbor’s home before returning and asking the men at the car if they needed help. He soon realized, however, they had broken into his home. He called 911 and was driving away when one of the men shot him in the back of the head.
His car was found at the back of a nearby corn field, where he’d struck a tree.
He’s been at Carolinas Medical Center since the shooting.
Four men have been arrested.
Khari Dewayne McClelland, 23, of Harmony, is charged with attempted murder, breaking and entering a building, larceny of a firearm and felony larceny. He is in the Rowan County jail under $5 million bond.
Jaylend Daquann Turner, 19, of Statesville, is charged with attempted murder, larceny of a firearm, breaking and entering a building and felony larceny. He’s jailed under $3 million bond.
Authorities say they will be charged with murder if Kauffman does not survive.
Tramel Devon Hart, 18, and Michael Dwayne Teasley, 25, are each charged with accessory after the fact and remain jailed under bonds of $500,000 apiece.
