Velveeta Reid-Hairston has been crowned Ms. Alumni of Livingstone College.
She raised more than $13,400 for the alumni association thanks to the support of family, friends, co-workers, church, family and local alumni.
Reid-Hairston, along with her court, participated in the homecoming parade and was presented at a special gala during the homecoming festivities.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Livingstone College and holds a master’s from Norfolk State University.
Reid-Hairston is currently employed as a social worker with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.
She is a member of the local Salisbury Rowan Davie Livingstone College National Alumni Association
The Granite Quarry High School class of 1958’s 55th reunion was held recently at Shiloh Reformed Church in Faith.
Master of ceremonies was Amie Carpenter Hampton of King, who was accompanied by husband Worth.
Entertainment was provided by Golden Memories, a group performing a variety of music.
The group includes Curtis Ribelin of Statesville, a member of the class of 1958, as well as his wife, Mary Jane, and friends Jan and Jim.
Jan performed “The Lord’s Prayer” prior to the invocation given by Gwynn Harrison of Granite Quarry, accompanied by his wife Patsy.
A memorial was held for the seven classmates who have died since the last reunion.
A candle was lit by James Peeler of Thomasville and Rodney Fulk of Faith as names were called in their memory.
They were accompanied by their wives, Carolyn Peeler and Brenda Fulk.
Others attending were Annie Hudson Seaford, Charles Hartley and wife Becky, Leon Trexler and wife Raemona, Sam Miller and wife Margaret, W.A. Cline and wife Joyce, Bill Fisher and wife Marilyn, Jerry Roseman and wife Marie, Dona Cross Sidden and husband Jim, and Sandra File Honeycutt, all of Salisbury.
Betty Rowland Queen of Granite Quarry, Vohn Peeler and wife Gayle of Faith, Patsy Webster Zimmerman and Husband Jack of Statesville, Frank Earnhardt and wife Sue of Mocksville, Stephen Kesler and wife Karen of Monroe, Vickie Lingle Long of Winston-Salem, Claudette Williams and guest Beamon Scarboro of Raleigh, Jane Wyrick Peeler and guest Kerry Bradshaw of Lewisville, Tommy Myers and guest Shirley Fletcher of High Point.
Out of state: Terry Bogle and wife Kay of Millersville, Md., Orrin Mahaffey and wife Reba of Sumter, S.C. Other guests were Vickie Hill Parks and Wayne Stancil of Faith.
The next reunion will be held in 2015.
