A Salisbury man remains behind bars Friday morning, authorities say, after he assaulted his grandmother following a confrontation over his alleged drug use. Investigators say he grabbed his 73-year-old grandmother by the arm, drawing blood, after she found him in a bathroom at her Hickory Drive home with drugs.
The Salisbury Police charged Matthew Watts Lawson, 28, with misdemeanor assault on a female, felony possession of a schedule I controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a $7,500 secured bond.
On Nov. 14, police went to the grandmother’s home following the assault. She told an officer she saw her grandson sitting on the bathroom floor, allegedly with a syringe and with a belt wrapped around his arm. Officers spotted a man walking Thursday night near Park Avenue and he was later identified as Matthew Lawson.
The officer asked if Lawson had addressed the warrants that were issued for the assault. A police report said Lawson told the officer he took care of the charges. The officer searched Lawson and found a plastic container on him that contained black tar heroin, a spoon, a cigarette filter with traces of heroin and a syringe.
Lawson has been convicted of driving while impaired, assault on an officer and resisting arrest. He’s also been convicted of drunk and disorderly conduct.
