Mustangs sweep MP Tigers

East Rowan’s basketball teams got off to a positive start on Wednesday at Mount Pleasant.
East’s girls led 43-8 at halftime and romped 75-34.
Kelli Fisher had 24 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks for the Mustangs, and Karleigh Wike had 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Lauren Thomas had 12 points, Melonye McCree had 11 rebounds, and Jocelyn Lowe had six assists.
“It was fun to watch,” East coach Danielle Porter said. “We did what we were supposed to do, played a lot faster than we’ve able to do in the past, and Kelli had a great first game.”
Jordan Coley scored 17 for the Tigers.
East plays at home Friday against South Davidson. There won’t be jayvee games, so tipoff will be right at 6 p.m.

East Rowan’s boys built a 14-point lead but struggled at the foul line and held on to beat Mount Pleasant 52-51 in a basketball opener.
East went 8-for-19 at the foul line and missed 1-and-1 opportunities on top of that.
“The good news is we won and a win is a win is a win,” East coach Trey Lebetter said. “It was ugly, but we got it, and we’ll move on and try to get the next one.”
Austin Love scored 14 for the Mustangs, and Donte Means had 13. Samuel Wyrick scored 11.
Harrison Bell only scored two points, but Ledbetter said his rebounding was the difference in the game.
Mount Pleasant (0-2) lost big to Hickory Ridge on Monday.

Catawba’s women won 85-81 at Wingate on Wednesday in their SAC opener at Cuddy Arena.
Chloe Bully led the Indians with 27 points and eight assists.
Emma Ucinski scored 19, and Zhaquondelee Greer had 18 for Catawba (2-1).
Ucinski and Mallary Clay made key free throws.
Former Statesville star Janitsha Williams had 29 for the Bulldogs.
Wingate came back from 23 points down to tie, but Catawba scored the last four points to pull it out.

Catawba’s men’s basketball team struggled at Wingate and lost its SAC opener 74-52 on Wednesday.
Deion Turman had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Tyrece Little had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Indians and blocked five shots in his season debut.
Kijuan Arrington also debuted and scored 13.
Catawba lost 57-35 on the backboards and shot 31 percent.
Catawba is home against SAC foe Mars Hill Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Catawba’s L.J. McCray was named first team All-SAC as a return specialist and as a defensive back.
He was the only Indian on the first team.
Receiver Nate Charest, offensive lineman Taylor Fender, defensive lineman Jonathan Jean and linebacker Jason Taylor made the second team.
L-R fullback Ike Whitaker (Salisbury) was a second team pick.
The SAC Offensive Player of the Year was Tusculum QB Bo Cordell.
Lenoir-Rhyne DB Michael Green was named SAC Defensive Player of the Year.
Mars Hill QB Trent Miller and L-R’s Rodney Singleton were honored as the top rookies.
L-R’s Joe Ray was named the top blocker. L-R’s Mike Houston was named coach of the year.
South Rowan opens at A.L. Brown tonight with a quadruple-header.
The varsity girls game will start around 6:30 p.m.
West Rowan won 64-15 over Berry Academy on Wednesday in a tri-match at Hunter Huss.
Thomas Current, Corbin Benton and Justin Evans won by forfeit
Cameron Butler, Juwan Houston, Dakota Goodson, Zach Ridenhour, Harold Johnson and Ben Kluttz won by pinfall.
Wood Poteat took a 14-1 major decision, and heavyweight Francisco Castro won 1-0.
• West won 40-39 against Huss. The teams tied 39-39 and the Falcons were declared winners on unsportsmanlike conduct criteria.
Current, Goodson, Benton, Castro and Craig Mattison won with pins.
O.J. Osborne won by forfeit. Houston won a 13-10 decision at 132.
West will wrestle at Marvin Ridge on Saturday.
Logan Shuping scored 26 points as the East Rowan jayvee boys rolled 72-46 at Mount Pleasant on Wednesday.
Cody Meadows added 13 for East, and Ellis Taylor had 10.
Bravon Goodlett had nine points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals, and Corbin Elliott scored nine.
Salisbury Academy’s girls won 45-15 against South Lake Christian to open their basketball season.
Maria Capito scored 15 points. Ellen Simons and Ivy Overcash scored 10 points each, and Anna Louise Lewis had eight.
Isabel Temple, Emily Mann and Anabel Barr contributed to a big defensive effort.
SA is home against Forsyth Country Day at 4 on Nov. 25.
