The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will consider at a meeting Wednesday hiring a consultant to assess security at the district’s schools.
The board meets at 4 p.m. at the school system’s administrative building,110 N. Long St. in East Spencer.
Board members will hear from Risk Manager Sharon Gardner and Maintenance Director Butch Bivens about safety concerns at Knox Middle School.
In a document included with the board’s agenda, staff members say that in 2007, the estimated cost for a door access control system and surveillance cameras at Knox was $160,000. That cost doesn’t include replacing doors, which may be needed due to the school’s age.
Now, the school system would need to hire an architect to get specifications for the school and rebid the project, the staff members say.
They’re recommending hiring Safe Havens International, a nonprofit campus safety center that works with schools and school systems on campus safety and crisis readiness, to assess security at all the district’s schools.
The school board will also review proposed changes to policies on employment, volunteers and the process for selecting school administrators.
