Shrubs, ivy and of course pansies now grace 17 large concrete planters in downtown Salisbury, thanks to the new Rowan Redbuds Garden Club.
More than a dozen club members were up to their elbows Friday in potting soil, filling the city’s containers with lush green and purple plants provided by Godley’s Garden Center. The city bought the plants at a discount, and club members volunteered to do the dirty work.
“This is a great opportunity to show that we are willing to take on beautification projects,” club founder Anganetta Dover said. “Service work is what being in a club is all about.”
Most materials in the planters should last for years, or until they outgrow the containers, including fastigiata, ivy, purple pixie and nandina. Annual flowers like the pansies can be swapped out seasonally to give the planters more color, Dover said.
Next up, Rowan Redbuds will plant six gardens at the Rowan Public Library, which they plan to maintain throughout the year as a thank you to the library, where they started meeting in April.
Anyone who would like to join the club, which has the motto “Beautify your home, neighborhood, city and county,” should call Dover at 704-638-0575 or email anganettadover@fibrant.com.
