Catawba falls to Bobcats

Catawba’s men’s basketball team couldn’t hold a 13-point, first-half lead and lost 90-86 to Lees-McRae in a high-scoring hoops opener at Goodman Gym on Saturday.
Catawba led 63-54 with nine minutes remaining.
Elon Edwards scored 28 points for the Indians in the Salisbury Roundball Classic contest, while Chance Rucker had 21. Rucker was 11-for-15 at the foul line.
Vismantas Marijosius (North Hills) scored 12 points. Nick Houston (Carson) hit three 3-pointers and had four assists for the Indians.
Catawba, which led 39-32 at halftime, was hurt by 21 turnovers.
Raul Tutton scored 16 points to lead four Bobcats in double figures.
Catawba plays Pfeiffer at 2 p.m. today at Goodman Gym.
• West Rowan’s Sherrill brothers, Keshun and K.J., teamed for 31 points as Augusta beat Tusculum 90-80.
Livingstone edged Kentucky State 62-60 at New Trent Gym on Saturday.
Ashley Walker led the Blue Bears (2-0) with 18 points. Sophie Lepzem scored 13. Cierra York scored nine points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Two free throws by Walker gave LC a 62-57 lead with 48 seconds left, and the Blue Bears hung on.
In the eGolf Tour’s Cabarrus Classic, T.J. Howe shot 66-67-68 —201 to win the event and $9,000.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 69-68-67 — 204 to finish 12-under and three shots back of Howe. Adams tied for fourth and won $2,625.
Adams finished No. 1 on the tour money list with $69,964.
Catawba lost to Carson-Newman 3-1 on Friday.
McKenzie Garrison had 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks for the Indians.
• Catawba fell 3-1 to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
Garrison had nine kills and 10 digs to lead Catawba (4-17, 4-15 SAC).
Ike Whitaker (Salisbury) scored three touchdowns as Lenoir-Rhyne rolled to a 62-24 win against Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday.
L-R (9-1) plays at Catawba next week. The Bears have clinched the SAC championship for the third year in a row.
• Carson-Newman rolled over Newberry 52-31; Mars Hill outscored Wingate 56-42 and Brevard beat Tusculum 52-33 in other SAC matchups.
• Virginia State and Winston-Salem State (both 9-1) stayed unbeaten in the CIAA and will meet for the championship.
GREENVILLE — Shane Carden threw for five touchdowns and ran for two more, setting a school record for most TDs in a game, to lead East Carolina to a 58-24 win against Tulsa on Saturday night.
Carden had TD passes of 28, 18, 5, 25, and 5 yards and two rushing TDs from 1-yard out for East Carolina (7-2, 5-1 Conference USA). Carden finished with 384 yards passing and 25 on the ground. Carden broke Scott Harley’s record of six touchdowns in a game set on Nov. 16, 1996 against Ohio.
Trey Watts rushed for 120 yards and a score for Tulsa (2-7, 1-4) and has now rushed for at least 100 yards for the 5th time this season and 12th of his career. The Golden Hurricane turned the ball over three times, including an interception that was returned by freshman DaShaun Amos for 100 yards, as time expired.
