GRANITE QUARRY — Greg Philpot, part of the administration team at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, is waging a write-in campaign for the Granite Quarry Board of Aldermen.
Philpot said he could bring a progressive voice to the board and would try to make the town better.
“There are a lot of opportunities we need to take advantage of,” he said. “… It’s a great city to be involved in.”
Philpot said he resisted putting his name on the ballot during the summer filing period because his family was still unsure what care his mother-in-law, who was recovering from a stroke, would need.
Her condition has improved, allowing him to consider the write-in effort, Philpot said.
Two seats on the five-member board are up for election Tuesday. The seats are currently held by Eloise Peeler and Brad Kluttz.
Five names will appear on the official Granite Quarry ballot: Peeler, Mike Brinkley, Jake Fisher Jr., Wes Rhinier and Arin Wilhelm.
Kluttz, who missed the filing period, too, also is encouraging voters to write him in as one of their two choices.
Philpot, 48, grew up in Largo, Fla., graduated from the University of South Carolina and is a former pharmaceutical sales representative.
He has lived in Granite Quarry for four years. He belongs to the Salisbury-Rowan Economic Development Commission, the Salisbury-Rowan Human Relations Council, the Communities in Schools board and is chairman-elect of the American Red Cross board.
Philpot also is involved in the Young Life Christian ministry and is a member of the town’s parks committee. He has worked on several town events.
Philpot and his wife, Sharon, have two children.
