The FirstARTS series of the Stanback Department of Sacred Music at First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church St., will host the Adaskin String Trio with concert pianist Sally Pinkas in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Formed in 1994, the trio performs extensively throughout the United States and Canada.
In addition, the trio’s concerts have been recorded for broadcast by CBC Radio, Radio-Canada and National Public Radio.
Although the Adaskin String Trio is currently based in New England, the members of the trio are all originally from Canada.
They met in Montreal where they each studied chamber music with founding Orford Quartet cellist Marcel Saint-Cyr.
They later completed two years as ensemble-in-residence at The Hartt School under the guidance of the Emerson Quartet.
The trio is named in honor of Murray Adaskin, one of Canada’s most loved and respected composers, and two of his brothers, violinist Harry Adaskin and producer and music educator John Adaskin.
Joining the trio for this concert will be Israeli born pianist, Sally Pinkas.
Pinkas has toured extensively and is currently pianist-in-residence and Professor of Music at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College.
The concert is free and open to the public. An offering will be received for the Music Memorial Fund of First UMC.

Lee Street theatre will open auditions for the staged reading of “OrnaMENTAL,” a nuanced portrayal of women’s friendships written by Salisbury resident Jenny Hubbard, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17.
This true-to-life comedy revolves around an annual Christmas tree decorating contest that brings together a diverse blend of characters.
Five actresses, ages 30-50, with the versatility to play multiple roles of varying ages, are needed. Marla Brown, executive director of Warehouse PAC of Cornelius, will direct.
Stage experience is welcome but not necessary. Auditions, consisting of cold readings from the script, are one day only at the new Lee Street Theater & Performing Arts Center, 329 N. Lee St.
Actresses must be available for evening rehearsals Dec. 2-5. Performance dates are at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6-8 with audience talk-backs afterwards.

KANNAPOLIS — A special children’s concert by the Piedmont Prime Time Community Band will be performed at 10 a.m. Saturday at the historic Gem Theatre, 111 W. 1st St.
The ensemble is under the direction of its new conductor, Dr. Laurence Marks, recently retired music professor and director of bands at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
This free concert includes 50 musicians who reside in Cabarrus, Rowan, Union and Mecklenburg counties.
The program will feature compositions by Disney and John Williams, including a spectacular medley of selections from all eight Harry Potter films.
In addition, there will be selections by Dutch composer Jan van der Roost and American composer Frank Ticheli’s unique setting of “Amazing Grace.”
The Piedmont Prime Time Community Band, now in its 13th season, presents a diverse musical repertoire at concerts held throughout the year.
New members are always welcome. Individuals with high school or college band experience are encouraged to apply for participation in sections with openings.

MOORESVILLE — The Mooresville Artist Guild announces a call for artists for its first juried exhibit and competition.
The Winter Juried Art Exhibition is supported by a grassroots sub-grant provided by the Iredell Arts Council and by Lake Country Gallery.
Cash prizes will be awarded, as well as gift certificates to Lake Country Gallery.
Anne Scott Clement, executive director and chief curator of Waterworks Visual Arts Center in Salisbury, will be the juror for this inaugural show.

The cast of Piedmont Players Theatre’s “Story Theatre” includes Garett Alewine, Madison Barrier, Elijah Carpenter, Micah Cross, Maggie Dees, Jaxon Evans, Jonah Evans, Joanna Gminder, Olivia Gregory, Zeb Harry, Kaylee Hawley, Elizabeth Jones, Ali Katib, Jacob Kluttz, Alexandra Luffman, Gavin McDaniel, Rachel Nuottila and Quinnlan Watson. The play by Paul Sills consists of a group of famous fables from the Grimm Brothers to Aesop.

Performance dates are Nov. 15-16 and 22-23. The box office opens Nov. 11.

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), and Rowan Public Library is inviting aspiring authors to start writing their first novel.
The library is hosting a free creative writing workshop by author Nathan Kotecki geared toward students in seventh through 12th grades, but all are welcome.
The workshop is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Stanback Auditorium.
Kotecki, author of “The Suburban Strange,” will share tips on how to bring characters, settings and plots to life.

An Award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, Steve Eulberg uses a variety of unusual instruments to create thought-provoking, smile-inducing, toe-tapping acoustic experiences.
Born and raised in the German-heritage town of Pemberville, Ohio, Eulberg was exposed to a variety of music in his home and learned piano, trumpet, ukulele, guitar and harmonica in his youth.
While at college, he learned to play the mandolin and dulcimer.
Eulberg delights in introducing the sweet music of dulcimers to people in diverse settings.
He passionately believes that music crosses cultural and language barriers because music builds community.
