Confusion on election
Published 12:00 am Thursday, October 31, 2013
A caller asked Wednesday why the Post has not had more information about the upcoming race for commissioners. She sounded eager to make her feelings known at the ballot box.
She got a two-part answer:
n The next time voters get to choose commissioners is a year from now — November 2014 — when legislators, the sheriff and a host of other offices also are up for election. Three seats on the Rowan County Board of Commissioners will be up for election in 2014, those now held by Jon Barber, Chad Mitchell and Jim Sides.
n The election coming up next week on Nov. 5 (which the caller probably had in mind) is for city councils and town boards. The 2013 election involves a good many people — Rowan has 10 municipalities — but not the entire county. The Post is in the midst of running stories about those races.
Here’s the schedule:
Tuesday: China Grove
Wednesday: Granite Quarry and Rockwell
Today: Spencer
Friday: Kannapolis and Landis.
Saturday: East Spencer and Cleveland
Sunday: Salisbury and Faith
Local elections deserve more attention from the media and voters. Swept up in controversies about the government shutdown and the rollout of Obamacare, we all tend to forget about the public officials who have the most direct impact on our immediate surroundings.
Thanks for the question. Hope this answer helps.
