Caroline Dobson Marshall was selected as this year’s Rowan Helping Ministries 2013 honor card artist.
Marshall, of China Grove, unveiled her card titled “Hands, Heads, Hearts” at a recent reception at Railwalk Studios and Gallery.
The Honor Card has been a Rowan Helping Ministries tradition for more than two decades. The card gives local artists a chance to support the community through the nonprofit and is also a way for supporters to honor their friends, co-workers, family members or others by making a minimum $5 donation to Rowan Helping Ministries.
“God has blessed me and I try to let my art bless others,” she said.
“I am humbly honored and extremely pleased that my artwork can be used to better the lives of those who need it most,” Marshall said.
Marshall was raised in China Grove and is a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in China Grove. She has often donated her work to raise money through fundraising efforts and mission trips. Marshall has taught watercolor techniques to friends and continues her craft.
Marshall’s mother, Kathryn Jordan Dobson, 87, was the inspiration behind her artwork submitted for the Rowan Helping Ministries 2013 Honor Card. Her mother began making toboggans for clients of Rowan Helping Ministries after being given a generous amount of yarn by her aunt five years ago. Since that time, Dobson’s friends have continued to give her yarn to encourage her generosity, which she enjoys sharing with “the least of these,” she said.
“It is very heartwarming to know that for those who may have so little, who may be homeless sleeping where they can, would at least have warm heads during cold winter days,” Marshall said.
Marshall’s mother was on hand during the reception, but her father, Robert Dobson, died before her talents were realized. Marshall brought a picture she created years ago of her father so that in some way, he too could share in the experience.
“Mother’s summer has been spent making scarves and toboggans. We look forward to another year of warming heads, hands and hearts,” Marshall said.
