To highlight Hanford-Dole’s Fire Prevention Week activities, the Union Volunteer Fire Department presented the “Sparky the Fire Dog” program.
Capt. Steve Cauble explained and demonstrated to students the tools that firemen use to fight fires and to protect themselves in a burning building. The importance of a working smoke detector and how to call 911 in an emergency were shown.
Capt. David Scott, an emergency medical technician with the Union fire department, demonstrated life-saving equipment that is taken to each 911 call. Fireman Travis Cauble was dressed in full fire fighting gear to show students how important it is to use safety measures in an emergency with an air tank, speaker microphones, and protective clothing.
Fireman Joey Childers, dressed as Sparky the Fire Dog, helped demonstrate the firefighting and life-saving techniques that the Union Volunteer Fire Department would use on every 911 call.
Hanford-Dole’s Communities In Schools site coordinator, Fran Simpson, lined up the presentation with the fire department. The National Fire Safety Council and local Rowan County businesses provided teachers with fire safety teaching materials for the students.
