SHS tennis wins 127th straight in CCC

Salisbury’s girls tennis team beat West Davidson 9-0 on Monday and won its 127th consecutive CCC match.
That sets a new mark for Rowan teams for consecutive conference wins in any sport.
The SHS girls won 126 straight conference matches in the SPC, YVC and CCC from 1989-2002. The Hornets lost twice to Lexington in 2002, but they are 253-2 in their last 255 conference matches.
Alexandra Drye, Kayla Honeycutt, Anna Flynn, Madeline Hoskins, Kathryn Rusher and Grace Steinman won singles matches. Drye-Hoskins, Honeycutt-Flynn and Rusher-Steinman won in doubles.
“I’m so proud of the girls, especially our four seniors who have been a part of four consecutive CCC titles,” SHS coach Scott Maddox said. “Former coach Chris Myers deserves the bulk of the credit for not only the streak but for the remarkable consistency it takes to put together such a streak. He worked tirelessly to get the team to this point, and my hat is off to him.”
On Wednesday, Salisbury plays North Rowan at home in a match dedicated to breast cancer awareness. Pink balls will be used and players will wear something pink.
Salisbury closes the regular season with a home doubleheader against Charlotte Catholic. The teams will concluded a match stopped by weather early in the season, and then will play the regular match.
Salisbury’s boys soccer team beat West Davidson 1-0 on Monday in a battle for first place in the CCC.
Michael Brown scored on a cros by Carlos Zanudo with 12 minutes left for the only goal.
Salisbury (13-1, 4-0) out-shot the Green Dragons 24-5 and controlled possession.
West Davidson keeper Adam Schofield made 18 saves.
“It was a typical rivals match,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “Both teams competed hard and cleanly for 80 minutes.”
Salisbury is at North Rowan on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
• Salisbury won the jayvee match 2-0.
• Tonight’s SPC matchups are South Rowan at East Rowan; Cox Mill at Carson; West Rowan at Hickory Ridge, and Central Cabarrus at Northwest Cabarrus.
Carson (7-3, 5-2) is still in contention in a league in which every team has lost.
Catawba receiver Carlos Tarrats (nine receptions, 97 yards, two TDs) and Catawba linebacker Jason Taylor (16 tackles, one sack) were named SAC players of the week for their work on offense and defense, respectively, against Carson-Newman.
Newberry kicker Kyle Clark was the special teams honoree.
• UNC Pembroke climbed to 13th in the Division II Coaches Poll that was released on Monday.
• Winston-Salem State is ranked 16th, while Carson-Newman is No. 20.
Catawba’s men’s team finished second and the women were third in the Charlotte Invitational held at McAlpine Park.
Nathan Hatley ran 28:62 on the 8K course and finished eighth to lead the Catawba men.
Catawba’s women were led by Olivia Myers, who ran 25:40 on a 6K course and finished 10th. Devon Purvis (Carson) was 18th.
• USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East Rowan) ran a season-best 26:05 in the Charlotte Invitational.
The big CCC match today is West Davidson at North Rowan.
West Davidson is still unbeaten in the league. North Rowan’s only CCC loss was at West Davidson.
Third-place Salisbury is home against Lexington.
Four CCC teams will make the playoffs.
• Carson (19-0, 10-0) is ranked No. 1 in the state and 39th nationally by MaxPreps.
Carson is at West Rowan today.
In other SPC matchups, second-place Hickory Ridge is at East Rowan; Concord is at Central Cabarrus, and South Rowan is at Cox Mill.
Five SPC teams will make the playoffs. South is tied for fifth with Northwest Cabarrus.
• North Iredell coach Natalie Tribble got her 300th win on Saturday at Fred T. Foard.
Catawba swimmers opened the season with a split at Mars Hill.
The Catawba women won 179-78. The Catawba men lost 136-117.
The Catawba women won every event. Palmer Benson (Davie) won two events.
Catawba won eight of the 12 men’s events. Andrew McCollister (Salisbury) won three events.
Catawba will compete in the North Carolina College Classic in Greensboro on Friday.
Livingstone went 0-3 in the CIAA Roundup in Charlotte against Chowan, Virginia State an Elizabeth City.
Carrie Blunt had 27 kills for the Blue Bears, including 19 in a 3-1 loss to Virginia State.
The McCanless Ladies Golf Association played its Club Championship on Saturday.
Sharon Miller won the Championship Flight. Mechelle Kuld placed second. Susan Houston won the First Flight.
Monica Greene and Robin Leslie tied for second.
• The “Tee Off For a Veteran” Tournament is set for Oct. 5 at Warrior.
The format is four-man Captain’s Choice. Two-man teams will be paired.
The cost is $90 per person and includes range balls, cart, lunch, door-prize entry, gift bag, beverage tickets, awards and prizes.
Awards will be given to the top two teams and for longest drive and for closest to the pin on all five par-3s.
Registration is at 11:30 a.m.
Lunch and a silent auction are set for 12:15 p.m. The shotgun start is at 1:30 p.m.
