Small invited overseas

East Rowan sophomore Brittany Small has been invited to represent North Carolina track and field in Australia in the 26th annual Down Under Sports Tournament.
Small will compete on the Gold Coast of Australia this summer.
Small’s specialty is the high jump. She cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to win the Rowan County Meet as a freshman. She also won the NPC championship in the high jump and placed sixth in the 3A state meet.
Small also competes in the 400 and was sixth in the county championships and fourth in the NPC Meet.
Small plays volleyball and basketball and has competed in high-level Junior Olympics volleyball camps in Colorado Springs, Grand Rapids, Mich., Oklahoma City and Chicago the last four summers.
It’s an expensive trip to Australia. Donations, contributions and sponsorships will be appreciated by the family.

Small’s brother Jamey played football at East and Catawba and is now the wide receivers coach at Greensboro College.
Salisbury’s boys soccer team romped 9-0 over Thomasville on Wednesday and stayed unbeaten in the CCC.
Bobby Cardelle scored four goals for the Hornets.
Emmy Turcios scored twice. Michael Brown, Zack Sukkasem and Nick Greene had a goal each.
The goal was Greene’s first of the season.
Cardelle, Brown, and Lucas Capito had two assists each. Carlos Zanudo, Josh Lynch and Luis Diaz had one.
Max Fisher had the shutout in goal.
Salisbury (13-1, 3-0) battles CCC co-leader West Davidson on Sept. 30.
In the AP prep poll, Mount Tabor is seventh in 4A.
In 3A, South Iredell is sixth, Concord is eighth, and Central Cabarrus is 10th.
In 2A, North Rowan received all 12 first-place votes this week.
The No. 1-ranked teams are still Charlotte Mallard Creek in 4A, Havelock in 3A, North Rowan in 2A and Warsaw Kenan in 1A.
Every team in the 3A top 10 is still unbeaten.
Unbeaten 2A teams are North Rowan, No. 3 Franklin, No. 4 North Brunswick, unranked Maiden and unranked Fairmont.
• Northwest Cabarrus senior offensive lineman Kendall Coughenour was the player injured, placed on a backboard and taken to a hospital by rescue vehicle during the West Rowan game on Friday.
Cougenhour was released early Saturday morning.
He has soreness, swelling and a concussion, but he’s going to be OK.
Carson won at 4A Reagan on Wednesday to improve to 19-0.
Will Collins (Salisbury) and Salisbury’s Frank Adams III got off to good starts in the eGolf Tour’s Columbia Classic in Blythewood, S.C.
Collins shot 4-under 68 and is tied for 10th, five shots off the pace. Adams is tied for 15th after shooting 69.
North Rowan’s eighth-graders won 24-2 against Southeast.
Jaden Jones scored on runs of 65 and 45 yards and added a 2-point conversion. McGwire Smith threw a 70-yard TD pass to Xavier Haley. Josh Ellis ran for a 2-point conversion and caught a conversion pass from Smith. Stanley Bailey, Dawson Hoover, Brett Lawson and Shy’kim Coney led the North defense. Will Anthony, Felix Espinal and C.J. Brown led the blocking.
North plays at China Grove Tuesday.
• Erwin’s eighth-graders won 8-6 against China Grove.
A blocked field goal attempt and a forced fumble helped seal the win.
Will Brown had a rushing TD and a 2-point conversion. Noah Green also pounded out yards on the ground for the Eagles. The Eagles’ defense forced a couple of fumbles and got an interception from Will Peeler late in the game.
Jeremiah Whitaker had a hat trick for Salisbury Academy in a 5-0 win against Statesville Christian.
Malik Holmes and Archie Dees scored a goal each.
Mitch Jeter had three assists, while Hank Robins had two.
Emily Mann and Jeter combined for the shutout in goal.
Erwin won 17-0 against Knox.
Chloe Breedlove and Anna Shafer homered. Ashlyn Fritz had two hits, including a triple.
Caroline Johnson, Shafer and Maddie Trexler combined on a no-hitter and struck out nine.
Catawba’s women’s soccer team lost 3-0 at Wingate in a SAC matchup on Wednesday.
Taryn Grivois scored twice for the Bulldogs.
Catawba (2-4-1, 0-2-1) had seven shots.
Toni Lucente (West Rowan) played for the Bulldogs, while Allison Baucom (West) and Karen Presnell (Salisbury) played for the Indians.
• Catawba’s men’s soccer team lost 4-1 to Wingate on Wednesday in SAC play.
Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) made six saves for the Indians (3-2, 1-2).

Erwin’s girls defeated Knox 8-1 for their seventh victory. Winners in singles were Haley Loflin, Mia Graham, Lauren Weisensel, Destini Hamilton and Kristen Brady. Winners in doubles were Loflin,Angel Scialdone, Graham,Weisensel, Hamilton and Brady.
Bethanie Stauffer won a singles match for Knox.
Knox will host Mooresville on Thursday.
Catawba Valley Community College swept Toccoa Falls to stay unbeaten.
Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 10 kills, while Tiffany Brooks (South Rowan) had four.
Cloninger had eight digs and two aces. Brooks had 1.5 blocks.
Lexington High will induct its first Hall of Fame class tonight at 7 p.m. at the Lexington Municipal Club.
Athletes will be inducted from Lexington and Lexington Dunbar high schools.
Inductees will be Presnell Mull, Charlie England, Bob Byerly, James Snyder, former Catawba hero Harold Bowen, William Dusenberry, Jimmy Bryson, James Henderson, Libby Matthews Johnson and Camey Timberlake Dillon. Mull, England and Henderson are deceased.
Carson will hold a basketball clinic and “parents’ night out on Saturday, Sept. 28.
