COOLEEMEE —The annual Cooleemee Textile Heritage Festival is Saturday.

The town’s three museums will be open with no admission fee. A special exhibit featuring “Kids Chores in Old Cooleemee” will bring back memories. Hands-on activities will include butter churning and scrubbing on old-time wash boards.

In the kids area, young folks can get their faces painted and paint their own pumpkins.

The Stan Bobbitt Band from Yadkin County, known for their covers of country music and rock n roll classics, will be playing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Erwin Temple CME Church Mass Choir will perform gospel music starting at 1:30 p.m.

Cooleemee native, musician and author, Joey Shore will be selling his latest book “The Incredible Adventures of Broken Twig.”

Many craft vendors will also be on hand to sell their handmade wares.

The 4th annual Carolina Cornbread Contest will begin at 11 a.m., with recipes by local bakers. First prize is $100 cash and a hand-painted plate by artist Bonnie Byerly.

Staff from the Cooleemee Recreation Department will be on hand as they pursue the grassroots funds campaign goal of raising $50,000 before January. The department plans to reapply for a NC Parks & Recreation Trust Fund grant at that time.

Proceeds from the Textile Heritage Festival go to keep Cooleemee’s museums open and its Discovering Our Heritage Kids program operating.

Rowan Public Library will host the Amber Waves Band in concert in the Stanback Auditorium at the headquarters, 201 W. Fisher St., at 7 p.m. today

GOLD HILL — The 24th annual Gold Hill Founder’s Day Celebration will be held Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. in Gold Hill Mines Historic Park.

The Founders’ Day Parade will kick off at 10 a.m. and entertainment will follow at 11 a.m.

Bring your little ones dressed in period costume and enter them in the Little Miss & Mr. Gold Hill Contest. Kids 10 year old and under are eligible to enter in two age divisions.

This year’s event will include arts and crafts, antique and Heritage Living displays and demonstrations depicting life from a bygone era.

The Heritage Living Exhibit Area at the Mining Office Site will include antique tractors, hit and miss engines and more.

Hayrides and history tours to the Powder House will begin at the Post Office Museum in the Heritage Area.

The 63rd North Carolina Troops will host a Civil War Living History Encampment on the grounds of the log barn and will also host a Civil War Skirmish at 5 p.m. The encampment will offer additional exhibits with the enlisted help of other regional regiments.

The annual Gold Hill Founder’s Day celebrates the heritage of the town that once was the gold mining capitol of North Carolina and the richest gold mining territory east of the Mississippi.

It is now a small community and is home to the 70-acre park and numerous restored shops in the mining village.

The event is free to the public.

Calling all teens. It’s time for the annual Teen Book Cover Contest at Rowan Public Library.

This year’s theme is “Seek the Unknown.”

Teens ages 11-17 are encouraged to design a book cover representing an existing book they have already read. The cover must be original and portray the work of the author in a unique way.

Entries will be accepted at any library location through Friday, Oct. 18. Winners will be announced by Oct. 25.

Prizes will be awarded at a special Friends of Rowan Public Library meeting Dec. 2.

Prizes will be awarded for two age categories: Middle school (ages 11-13) and high school (ages 14-17).

Salisbury Parks and Recreation will host a Family Campout at the Salisbury Community Park from 3 p.m. to 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5.

Piedmont Players Theater’s “Story Theatre” Youth Workshop will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.

This workshop will focus on preparing students to audition for a non-musical production, specifically geared toward PPT’s upcoming production of “Story Theatre.”

Skills developed will be in stage performance, character development, movement and effective auditioning techniques.

If your child has ever wanted to audition but just didn’t know how, has auditioned many times and just can’t seem to get that role, or just wants to fine tune their acting and auditioning skills, this workshop will be helpful.

The workshop is for students elementary through high school. It will be held at the Norvell Theater rehearsal hall, 135 E. Fisher St. Edward Whitney will be the instructor.

GRANITE QUARRY – The 46th annual Granite Quarry Civitan Fiddler’s Convention will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at East Rowan High School, 175 St. Luke’s Church Road

Registration for the competition begins at 4:30 p.m. The competition which features individual and bands, begins at 6 p.m. More than $1,700 in cash prizes will be awarded along with trophies and ribbons.

Mark Brincefield, a Salisbury resident who has served as the Salisbury Post’s editorial cartoonist for 25 years, will teach two six-week classes next month.

Learn basics of creating your own original cartoon characters and comic strips.

Students ages 11 and 12 years old will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays during the same time period.
