Murtaugh promoted to major

On Sept. 1, Corbin Murtaugh was promoted to the rank of major in the United States Marine Corps. A graduate of West Rowan High School and Appalachian State University, he has been in the Marine Corps for 12 years, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Murtaugh is a helicopter pilot currently assigned with HMX-1 in Qauntico, Va.
He is the son of Jim and Pat Murtaugh of Salisbury and the brother of Colleen P.M. McDonald.

Army Pvt. Haley S. Keever has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
The daughter of Jeffery Keever and Crystal Trivette, both of Rockwell, she is a 2011 graduate of East Rowan High School.

The son of Brantley Melvin of Columbus, Ga., and Sharice Baxter of Elk Grove, Calif., he is the nephew of Brian Melvin of Salisbury.
