Carson’s boys cross country team won the varsity race in the Beeson Park Invitational in Kernersville on Saturday.
There were 20 teams in the race. Carson’s score was 59. Mount Tabor was second with a score of 114. Northwest Cabarrus was sixth.
Zachary Marchinko led the Cougars. He was third in 16:51.
Other Cougars competing were Danyal Sherer (10th, 17:36), Garrett Ingold (12th, 17:46), Grant Doby (15th, 17:49), Nick Cox (23rd, 18:00), Dylan Snider (38th, 18:22), Hunter Kimball (18:26), Wil Holshouser (18:42), Gabe Peeler (19:00) and Graham Purcell (19:21).
Dylan Koontz ran 18:55 and was 15th in the jayvee race.
Brittany Chester, assistant for men’s and women’s cross country, will become head coach upon the retirement of Bill Haggerty at season’s end.
Chester competed at Catawba and coached cross country and track and taught science at West Rowan. Rory Godsey will continue as an assistant coach.
• Both Catawba teams were seventh in Bulldog Stampede at Wingate on Saturday.
Olivia Myers (21:58, 21st) led Catawba’s women. Matt Jordan-Steele (29:42, 19th) led the Catawba men in an 8K race.
Catawba lost 25-17, 25-20 and 25-14 to Wingate on Friday.
Haley lanier had 11 kills for the Indians.
• Catawba Valley Community College swept Wake Tech on Friday. Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had eight kills and 11 digs. CVCC (17-0) also swept Louisburg. Cloninger had nine kills and 12 digs.
• Catawba (2-4, 2-2 SAC) had a dozen blocks and won 25-12, 25-15 and 25-20 against Coker on Saturday.
Bri Howard collected six kills with five blocks, while Emily Richardson had five kills and six blocks.

Tusculum women’s soccer head coach Mike Joy became the sixth coach in NCAA Division II history to reach 300 career wins as the Pioneers defeated Mars Hill University 4-0 on Saturday night.
• Carson-Newman scored two second-half goals and beat Catawba’s women 3-1 on Saturday at Frock Field in a SAC match.
Sophie Waller scored to give the Indians (2-3-1, 0-1-1) a 1-0 lead.
• Catawba’s men’s soccer team won 2-0 against Carson-Newman on Saturday.
Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) scored the first goal for the Indians (3-1, 1-1).Declan Stimson scored the second goal. Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) had five saves.
