RowanWORKS ready to roll out annual report

The Economic Development Commission, also known as RowanWORKS, presents an annual report to keep its funders, other stakeholders and the community informed about its projects, activities and results.
This year’s report will be presented on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the boardroom of the Gateway Building at 204 East Innes Street in Salisbury, and will also be made available to the public online. The following are just a few of the more significant success stories in recent years:
n Gildan Yarns made an investment of $43 million and is ramping up employment, eventually reaching more than 200 people.
n Henkel made an investment of $28 million while Rowan County retained 81 jobs and added 108. Henkel consolidated six plants to two in North America, so it was a major win or lose situation for our community, and we won!
n Boral Composites made an investment of $12.8 million and added 16 full-time positions in East Spencer.
n Tuscarora Yarns made an investment of $6.3 million and created 124 new jobs in China Grove.
RowanWORKS has an 11-member board, of which seven are appointed by Rowan County; two are appointed by the city of Salisbury; one is appointed by the other municipalities; and one is an ex-officio member served by the chairman of the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce. The board members are very active and supportive. The employees are highly skilled, hard-working and effective, and they work diligently to respond to needs and requests of stakeholders, prospects from outside the community and businesses within the community.
RowanWORKS focuses on the following:
n Working with potential new industries looking to locate facilities here and employ local people. Our goal is to increase employment and tax base.
n Working with existing industries looking to expand or helping them with other issues.
n Helping to market appropriate potential sites, some of which are owned by Rowan County (such as Summit Industrial Park) and some of which are owned by private citizens or companies.
n Partnering with regional, state or national organizations to identify prospects, create awareness and market our community.
The offices of RowanWORKS are located in the Gateway Building, where we partner with other economic development organizations for the good of Rowan County.
