The Mayor’s Cup will be at stake when Catawba (1-0) plays Livingstone (0-1) tonight at the Blue Bears’ Alumni Stadium.
Catawba is 13-0 against the Blue Bears and has won all 12 “Mayor’s Cup” contests.
Catawba opened with a 10-9 home win against West Liberty, while Livingstone lost 34-17 at J.C. Smith. Both teams have new head coaches, with Curtis Walker piloting the Indians and Daryl Williams leading the Blue Bears.
Salisbury (7-1) beat Ledford 5-1 on Thursday.
Landon Goodman’s header on a cross by Carlos Zanudo gave the Hornets the first goal. Ledford scored on a penalty kick for a 1-1 tie at halftime.
Emmy Turcios assisted on goal by Bobby Cardelle to put Salisbury ahead to stay, and Cardelle assisted on a left-footed goal by Clint Comadoll for a 3-1 lead. Josua Lynch’s first career goal on a PK made it 4-1. The Hornets closed the scoring when Matt Washko got his first career goal off a blast by John Canipe that was deflected by the keeper.
“It was a classic case of right place at the right time, and he knew what to do with it,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “He hit a top-shelf, back-post shot that found side netting from 14 yards out. It was outstanding.”
Ranked second in 2A, Salisbury is at home against Central Cabarrus, CATA and CCC opponent East Davidson on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
• Salisbury’s jayvees won 3-1.
Catawba Valley Community College swept Guilford Tech. Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had nine kills, nine digs and six aces.
• CVCC also swept Brunswick CC with Cloninger getting 11 kills.
Gracie Honeycutt had three hits as Erwin beat Southeast 11-1.
