Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students at Sacred Heart Catholic School, who would not have been born on Sept. 11, 2001, gather around the spirit rock which was repainted by the eighth-graders in memory of lives lost on Sept. 11.
Pre-kindergarden teacher, Whitney Burges, reads “September 12th…We Knew Everything Would Be All Right,” which was written by first grade students at H. Byron Masterson Elementary in Kennett, Mo. It was written the day after 9/11 and is a story of pictures that those students drew. The school calculated that those first-graders in 2001 would now be in college. The young Sacred Heart students laid their little flags around the rock.
Other events at the school included a special opening morning assembly with scripture and prayers offered in remembrance. The students observed a minute of silence at 8:45 a.m. with the church bells ringing and recited the Rosary, dedicated to lives lost on Sept. 11.
Sacred Heart School has two new teachers. Karina Coello is the new music teacher. Parishioner Ryan Habeeb will teach sixth- and eighth-grade socials studies.
Coello is a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and graduated from Adelphi University in New York with a BA in music with a concentration in music education. She is certified in grades kindergarten through 12 and will teaching music to the students.
Habeeb, who graduated with a BA in history from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will also direct the after-school care program.
