WASHINGTON — The International Trade Administration has announced that North Carolina merchandise exports increased 6 percent in the first half of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012, growing from $14.1 billion to $14.8 billion.
That’s a record high export level for the state.
“This new export data from the first half of 2013 show states across the country have more businesses marketing their products abroad and creating thousands of new jobs in their local communities. This data confirms that our efforts to help American businesses compete globally are having an impact right here in North Carolina,” said Francisco Sánchez, under secretary of commerce for International Trade. “The United States is selling more goods and services to the rest of the world than ever before. The International Trade Administration will continue to do everything we can to assist North Carolina businesses as they increase their exports and create jobs.”
North Carolina’s merchandise export sales in the first half of 2013 outpaced the 2012 figures in many top destinations, including: India (+86 percent); France (+67 percent); Saudi Arabia (+44 percent); the United Kingdom (+18 percent); and Korea (+14 percent). Key merchandise export categories include: chemicals; machinery manufactures; transportation equipment; computer and electronic products; and textiles.
“These export numbers show that many North Carolina businesses continue to do well in their global sales,” said Greg Sizemore, director of the U.S. Export Assistance Center in Charlotte. “In these challenging economic times, exporting is helping many businesses thrive. We’d like to help businesses with their exporting efforts.”
