GOLD HILL — A bluegrass benefit for Vivian Hopkins will be held at the Russell-Rufty Shelter in Gold Hill Mines Historic Park from noon- 7 p.m. Aug. 25.
Hopkins, who is usually on the other end of most Gold Hill and bluegrass-related fundraising events, recently underwent surgery with complications and pneumonia and is continuing to recover.
Proceeds will help with hospital bills and loss time from work.
Members from Historic Gold Hill and Mines Foundation Inc. and merchants of Gold Hill Village are partnering in the event, which will include a silent auction.
Items for the auction may be donated to any village merchant. Hamburgers, hot dogs and barbecue will be available during the afternoon and evening. Face painting and other activities will also be available.
Hopkins, an N.C. “Road Scholar,” is vice president of the historic foundation. She and husband Glenn also run the E.H. Montgomery General Store in the village.
Carl White of the “Life in the Carolinas” television show will be filming the benefit for a segment on “Bluegrass in the Carolinas.” White will also be the emcee for the day.
Two of the bands performing at the benefit are involved in the Generation Bluegrass DVD project: The Edwards Family and Daniel Greeson with Ben Marshall & Friends.
