Scrimmages are set for Saturday

A.L. Brown’s varsity and jayvee teams will scrimmage Charlotte Country Day at home on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Admission is $3.

• Carson is part of a four-team scrimmage that begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Cougars are joining Monroe, Central Academy and Lewisville, S.C., at Wingate.
• Davie County is set to scrimmage Statesville at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday.
Both of those teams are on North Rowan’s very challenging scheduled for this season.
• Also on Saturday morning, East Rowan is part of a five-team scrimmage at North Stanly. Mount Pleasant, Anson and East Montgomery also will participate.
North Stanly rising sophomore back Antonio Williams is rated as one of the top prospects nationally in the Class of 2016.
• Davie County’s sophomore back Cade Carney already has offers from N.C. State and Wake Forest.
Carney rushed 274 times for 1,908 yards and 17 TDs as a freshman. Carney (5-11, 185) was held to under 100 yards only by West Rowan and Reagan, and he threw for 154 yards against Reagan.

Regional American Legion tournaments begin across the nation this week.
The Southeast Regional is being held at Asheboro’s McCrary Park and gets started today.
Today’s four games are Bessemer, Ala. vs. Campbellsville, Ky. at 9 a.m.; Jacksonville, Fla. vs. Albemarle, Va. at 12:30 p.m.; N.C. champion Wilmington vs. Irmo-Chapin, S.C. at 4:30 p.m., and host Randolph County vs. Rockdale, Ga. at 7:30 p.m.

The Team Greensboro squad that included West Rowan’s Nick Collins won the championship at the Blue-Grey Classic in Greensboro.
The Kannapolis Intimidators were washed out on Wednesday at Greenville.
The game will not be made up, as the teams will not meet again this season.
The Intimidators return home tonight. They’ll take on the Delmarva Shorebirds, a Baltimore Orioles farm team, at 7:05 p.m.
Southeast Middle School softball tryouts will be on Aug. 19 from 2:30-4 p.m.
Players must have a current physical and proof of insurance before they can try out.

Fall Baseball Sign-Ups

Rowan Little League is accepting sign-ups at Godley’s Garden Center through Aug. 24 for fall baseball and girls softball leagues.
Online registrations are accepted at http://www.rowanlittleleague.com.
Fall ball is for ages 3-14. The cost is $50. Baseball age is as of April 30, 2014, while softball age is as of Dec. 31, 2013. Games begin after Labor Day. Contact Wade Furches at 704-633-2873 or Jeff Bernhardt at 704-326-5255 for information.
• Spencer Little League will be holding registration at the 8th Street Ballpark in Spencer on Friday, Aug. 9, from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 until noon.
Registration is $25 per child. Also registration can be made online at www.playspencerlittleleague.com.
• China Grove youth baseball and softball registrations will be taken at Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove until August 15.
Fees are $40 until August 15. Leagues offered are 5/6 Coach Pitch; 7/8 Coach Pitch; 9/10 baseball, and 11/12 baseball. Softball leagues are 5/6/7; 8/9/10 and 11/12/13.

South Football Seats

Returning South Rowan reserved seat ticket holders for football have first option to purchase their tickets again through Aug. 8 in the main office from 11-1 or 6-8.

Five regular-season home games are included in the $35 price. Remaining seats will go on sale to the general public beginning Saturday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m., in the stadium during the “Meet the Raiders” picture day.
