Back in January I agreed to serve as this year’s Rowan County United Way’s Campaign chairman. From day one I made it my mission to educate as many people as possible about the good work done through this organization and its member agencies. We have visited many individuals, companies and groups telling the United Way story.
Everyone has been receptive and willing to listen. Early in the year, we were able to put a team of tireless community leaders together to serve on the cabinet who have been working for months now, with no letting up in sight. Our 15 member agencies have been working hard to get the word out about their work and the importance of United Way funding. Many of these agencies have seen cuts, both on the federal and state level, which makes this campaign even more important.
Our campaign theme, “Raised Here … Stays Here,” simply means we take care of our own. This is a local campaign that improves the quality of life for the citizens of Rowan County. We need everyone’s help. If you are not involved in a company campaign and would like to be a part of making Rowan County a better place to live, please call the Rowan County United Way office at 704-633-1802 or go to our website www. rowanunitedway.org.
With the Lord’s help and all of us working together, we will make a difference in the lives of many.

It seems to me the prayer issue is somewhat between church and state, or should I say religion and state?
The Bible speaks on prayer in many ways. The president of our country puts his hand on a Bible to take the oath of office, and there are many in the White House. Four of the massive paintings hanging in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol have a biblical background, if you do research on them. We put our hand on the Bible in the courts when we are asked to tell the truth, so that tells me the Bible must have some government meaning. I would not put my hand on something I did not believe in.
If this is the direction we are headed, we might as well replace the Bible with a cookbook. It begins here. Next, it will be that Christians can’t pray in public places, and Christian rights will be no more.
I will continue to pray wherever I wish, as the ones who are against it offend me as a Christian.
