Salisbury Police received phone calls about two men on the corner of South Clay and East Bank streets with guns. However, when officers arrived they saw three men. The men began to walk away as officers approached them. Officers were familiar with one teen, Dequan Torrez Chawlk, who they say pulled a handgun from the back of his pants waistband. He took off running and officers chased him. The officers lost him near Shaver Street, but were able to catch up to him a short time later. Officers were able to retrieve the handgun that Chawlk dropped while running.
Chawlk, 19, of the 300 block of Torbush Drive, East Spencer, was charged with disorderly conduct, resist, obstruct, delay an officer and carrying a concealed gun, all misdemeanors.
Chawlk has a pending court date for misdemeanor going armed to the terror of people. Chawlk was convicted in April 2012 and January 2013 of disorderly conduct. In 2010, a then 16-year-old Chawlk was charged with fighting another teen on a school bus. A verbal altercation escalated and the other student was assaulted. Chawlk remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.
