Nianouris is club champ crown

Former Salisbury golfer Alex Nianouris won the Warrior Club Championship on Sunday.
A rising sophomore at Davidson, Nianouris won the title for the second time.
He won by a single stroke over Joey Boley, who missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff.
Nianouris shot 70-71 — 141, while Boley shot 68-74 — 142. Jake Kennedy shot 143 for third place.
Also competing in the Championship Flight were Bubba Hendren (146), Chris Owen (147), Alex Lee (148) and Andy Beaver (151).
Mike Frye won the Senior title with a two-day score of 136. Dean Harwood finished second at 148.
Flight winners included Mike Mills (First Flight, 145), David Lyerly (Second Flight, 161), Gary Chastain (Third Flight, 168) and Brit Staton (Fourth Flight, 179).
• Ronnie Eidson shot 69 and won the Davidson County Amateur by one shot. The tournament was shortened to 18 holes by storms on Saturday.
• The Country Club of Salisbury Donald Ross Interclub team had an 867 score and won against Forsyth County (882)and Alamance County (889). Twenty players represented each club, with six net scores and six gross scores counting.
• The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
The winning team members were Harry Owens, Jan Godwin and Ricky Honeycutt. The team of Robin Leslie and Gene and Mary Seaford placed second.
Honeycutt won longest putt.
ATLANTA — Jason Heyward homered and drove in two runs to help the Atlanta Braves beat St. Louis 5-2 on Sunday night, capping their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals at home in 10 years.
The Braves broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the sixth inning off rookie Shelby Miller (10-7) and two relievers.
Pinch-hitter Joey Terdoslavich drove in Chris Johnson with the go-ahead run. Heyward added another run-scoring single.
Heyward has nine homers this season, including two in the series between NL division leaders.
Kris Medlen (7-10) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings to snap his three-game losing streak.
Miller allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.
The Braves finished their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals at Turner Field since April 22-24, 2003.
The Cardinals were held to three runs in the series.
In the American Legion state tournament in Wilson on Sunday, Wilmington beat Lincoln County 13-1; Randolph topped Shelby 10-6; Kernersville won 12-0 against Lincoln County, and Wilmington stayed unbeaten with a 6-5 win against Garner. Shelby and Lincoln County were eliminated.
Today’s matchups are Garner vs. Randolph and Wilmington vs. Kernersville.
Hickory belted three homers and whipped the Kannapolis Intimidators 6-1 on Sunday.
First practices for East Rowan fall sports were announced for Aug. 1.

Girls golf at McCanless at 5 p.m.
Girls tennis from 8-10 p.m.

Johnson singled with two outs in the second, moved to third when the ball bounced past Carlos Beltran in right field for an error, and scored on a single by Andrelton Simmons. Heyward’s line-drive homer to the front row in right field pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third.
The Cardinals pulled even with two runs in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles by Pete Kozma and Miller produced the first run.
The Braves’ two-run sixth began with two outs. Johnson singled for his second hit and moved to third on Simmons’ second single. Terdoslavich and Heyward followed with run-scoring hits.
