Catawba graduate Tim Pittman accepted a teaching postion at Salisbury High on Monday.
Pittman will teach Exceptional Children and will coach cross country and wrestling for the Hornets.
Pittman has been the wrestling coach at North Rowan in recent years and had built the Cavaliers into a power in 1A. He was named region coach of the year last spring.
North was state-runner in the 1A dual-team playoffs to West Wilkes in 2011 and 2013 and took another step by winning the 1A state individual tournament last March. He coached individual state champions Marc Gonzalez, Damon Ellis and Will Robertson last season.
“We had a great time and North Rowan and a run that I really enjoyed,” Pittman said. “But now it’s time to move on.”
The East girls won 67-60 against the West in Monday’s annual all-star game played at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Deanneisha Jackson (Harnett Central) had 12 points and seven rebounds for the East and was named MVP.
Mylia Garner (Jordan-Matthews) scored 16 for the West squad.
• The East All-Stars won the boys game 107-84 on Monday night.
The East shot 55 percent in the second half and scored 63 points to wipe out an eight-point deficit at the half.
De’vonte Graham (Raleigh Broughton) scored 20 points for the East.
Travis Outlaw (Person County) scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds to take MVP honors. Anthony Vanhook (Chapel Hill) also scored 16 for the East.
Outlaw will play at UNC Greensboro.
Kevin Hunt (Dudley) scored 18 to pace the West team, while Clay Byrd (East Burke) had 16.

West Rowan lost 8-4 to Kernersville on Monday and was eliminated from the Junior Legion state tournament.
West was one of the final four teams in the double-elimination event.
West scored four runs in the third for a 4-1 lead but Kernersville came right back.
Austin Love and Micah Marsh pitched for West (19-14).
Tyler Poteat had two hits, while Marsh, Noah Teeter, Hunter Shepherd and Kacey Otto had one each.
Mint Hill beat South Caldwell 3-1 on Monday and is the other finalist.
Mint Hill plays Kernersville today and would have to beat Kernersville twice to win the title.
Cherryville ended its season with an Area IV semifinals loss to Lincoln County.
Cherryville coach Bobby Dale Reynolds ended the season with 668 career American Legion victories. He’s 26 wins away from the state record of 694 held for many years by Joe Ferebee, who coached teams at Spencer, Salisbury, Albemarle and Rowan County.
• Shelby won Area IV’s one-game championship series by beating Lincoln County 4-2 on Monday.
Shelby will play Kernerville in a first-round game on Friday in the state tournament in Wilson, while Lincoln County will be matched up with Randolph County.
Other teams in the field are host Wilson, defending champ Wilmington, Jacksonville and Garner.

Local golf

Michael Childress shot 77 in qualifying for the N.C. Junior Boys 13U Championship. He tied for fifth in qualifying.
Childress lost in Championship Flight match play to Davidson’s Michael Sanders 2 and 1.
• In a North Carolina Amateur Match Play Golf Championship sectional qualifier, Salisbury’s Bill Haynes shot 75. He tied for ninth and was one of 23 players who shot 78 or better to advance.

Youth track

Hurley YMCA Warriors competed at the Russell Blunt East Coast Invitational in Durham.
Leah Cressler was third in the 3000 meters in 13:38. Andrew Burgess was fourth in 10:57.
Tabitha Landy ran 27.87 in a 200 prelim and ran 28.18 to finish eighth in the final. Landy was 12th in the 100 in 13.39 seconds.
In the 1500, Parker Westbrook was seventh in 6:02; Matthew Burroughs was 11th in 6:26; Cressler was fourth in 5:56, and Burgess was fifth in 4:50.
Jalen Houston placed fourth in the 80-meter hurdles in 13.85.
• Eli Julian and Houston will compete in the USATF Junior Olympics in Greensboro this week.
• Eli Julian, Noah Julian, Burroughs, Cressler, Westbrook, Nate Shaffer and Karrigan Foster will compete in the AAAU Junior Olympics in Detroit on July 27-Aug. 3,
The Kannapolis Intimidators were rained out on Monday at West Virginia.
The Intimidators will play a doubleheader today, starting at 5:05 p.m.
Olivia Gabriel and Maren Shumaker, rising eighth-graders at Southeast Middle, played on the Lady Phoenix Select girls basketball team that won the Classic Bracket AAU National Championship for seventh-graders played in Cincinnati.
The Phoenix lost games to teams from Indiana and Georgia before winning six straight games. They won against teams from Pennsylvania, Georgia, Indiana, New York, Michigan and Tennessee. The Phoenix won 54-49 in the championship game against the Tennessee Fury, the defending champs.
Pfeiffer announced the hiring of Paul Lawson as men’s and women’s volleyball coach, effective Aug. 5.

Lawson has 20 years of experience at the college level and played professionally in Europe.
