I totally agree with Jim Younts’ July 17 letter regarding “the protesters” and have some additional thoughts. Where were Brothers Sharpton, Jackson and the liberal media when O.J. Simpson was acquitted of practically beheading his Caucasian wife (the mother of his children) and one other male Caucasian? If I recall correctly, the jury of 12 consisted of 10 females and two males and was 75 percent Afro-American and 25 percent white or Hispanic. Ten of the 12 were female and two were male.
My point is that this mix was selected by and approved by the defense and the prosecution. Was the jury biased? Probably. Did all America agree with the verdict? Probably not, but the verdict was accepted and I do not recall any rioting, burning, nor looting taking place by the non-Afro-American populace. If someone recalls instances, then I stand corrected.
To sum up, the catchy phrase coined by the very capable attorney Johnny Cochran is just as applicable for George Zimmerman as for O.J. Simpson: “If the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”
Trayvon Martin’s death was a tragedy and perhaps not necessary but the accepted jury spoke and their verdict should be respected.
