Authorities made quite a discovery after they were alerted that a registered sex offender failed to notify officials of his change of address.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged Stephen Paul Aydelotte, 43, of the 100 block of South Shaver Street, Salisbury, with failure to register as a sex offender and second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
He was registered in Utah after he was convicted of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Aydelotte moved to North Carolina from Utah in May 2012, a Rowan Sheriff’s Office statement said. He did not notify Utah authorities of his move to Salisbury and did not notify Rowan officials once he arrived in the county.
A Salt Lake City detective informed Rowan officials that Aydelotte moved to Salisbury. Rowan officials contacted the U.S. Marshals Service for assistance. Both agencies watched the Shaver Street home for a few days.
Aydelotte was arrested at his home with the help of the Salisbury Police, who had investigated a disturbance there on July 10. While at the house, investigators found a cell phone and Aydelotte gave consent to search it. Investigators found nude pictures of a female and a child on the phone. The pictures were found under an app titled “gallery” and also a messaging application called “Kik” that allows users to transmit text messages and photos.
One picture was of a nude female, but investigators could not determine her age. The young woman may have been a teenager or young adult. The other picture was of a nude female and male that investigators believed was a child. Aydelotte was placed in the Rowan County jail under a $12,500 secured bond.

In an unrelated case, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged 48-year-old Phillip Larry Berryman of the 1300 block of Old Plank Road, Salisbury, with a sex offender residence violation for living too close to a child care center.
Berryman left the area after warrants were issued for his arrest. The U.S. Marshals Office also assisted in locating Berryman, who was found south of Wadesboro in Anson County.
Berryman was brought back to Rowan County where he remains in the county jail under a $110,000 secured bond for failing to notify of address change and a probation violation.
