West Rowan took the opening game of a best-of-three second-round Junior American Legion series with Rowan County with a 9-8 eight-inning win on Monday in Mount Ulla.
Lee Poteat got the game-winning, walk-off single with the bases loaded.
Jonathan Luther got the start on the mound for West and pitched three strong innings. Brett Graham came on in relief, and winning pitcher Austin Love finished things up.
West was led at the plate with two doubles by Hunter Shepherd. Others with doubles were Margarito Romero, Micah Marsh and Tyler Poteat. Brandon Walton and Lee Poteat had two hits apiece.
Dustin Ritchie had two hits for Rowan, while Jeremy Simpson and Jackson Justus drove in two runs each.
Alec Hamilton took the loss on the mound.
Game 2 will be played at Newman Park today at 4 p.m. prior to the Rowan-Wilkes Senior Legion game at 7.

Local golf

Alex Nianouris (Salisbury, Davidson), Alex Lee (Salisbury, Catawba) and Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) were qualifiers on Monday at Statesville Country Club for the N.C. Match Play Amateur Championship.
Lee shot 73 to tie for 14th. Nianouris shot 75 to tie for 30th. Kennedy shot tied for 33rd.
Par was 72. The best scores were 69s.
The cutline was at 76.

Troy Beaver (Salisbury, Elon) shot 78.
The Championship will be held at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh July 30-Aug. 4.
• The McCanless Couples played a four-man Captain’s Choice format Sunday.
Winning team members were Robin Leslie, Tim Earnhardt and Mary and Gene Seaford.
The team of David Huneycutt, Paul Hill Jr. and Kim and Walt Kincaid finished second.
Walt Kincaid won closest to the pin. Earnhard won longest putt.

Youth baseball

The China Grove 9-year-old all-stars rallied to East Rowan 5-4 to win the Cal Ripken Area 3 Championship.
Both teams advanced to the state tournament to be held in Bunker Hill.

Legion baseball

Stanly County scored eight runs with two outs in the ninth and beat the Mooresville Moors 12-3 on Monday in Game 1 of a best-of-five series.
Game 2 is scheduled to be played in Albemarle tonight at Montgomery Park.
• In Area III Northern Division action, Randolph beat Davidson County 5-1, and Kernersville topped High Point 7-3.
Easton Welch pitched a gem for Randolph, with relief help from Hunter Jobe, and put away Davidson in less than two hours.
Dylan Prevatte homered for Randolph.
The Rowan-Wilkes series winner will play the survivor of the Kernersville-High Point series.
The Stanly-Moors winner advances to play the winner of the Randolph-Davidson series.
