Southern Rowan lost to Stanly County 4-2 in the opener of a best-of-five playoff series on Wednesday at the South Rowan field.
Stanly hurlers Russ Weiker and Heath Blackmon controlled the game. Wieker struck out nine and pitched into the seventh inning. Shortstop Cody McKenzie made a heads-up play to get Stanly out of a jam in the seventh, and Blackmon didn’t allow a hit in the eighth or ninth.
Southern Rowan (13-9) had only four hits — singles by Ben Gragg, Dylan Goodman, John Daugherty and Connor Bridges — and twice popped up sacrifice bunts to kill scoring chances.
Dillon Atwell (4-3) pitched very well, lasting into the eighth inning, but Southern didn’t make defensive plays in the third and fourth innings as Stanly grabbed a 3-0 lead. Billy Winecoff pitched in relief for SR.
J.P. Lisk knocked in two runs for Stanly (13-9).
Dylan Carpenter had a sac fly in Southern’s two-run seventh. Dillon Parker and Bridges scored runs.
Game 2 is scheduled for Albemarle today, but if the field there insn’t playable, the game would be moved to South. A decision is expected early in the day.

Junior legion

West Rowan, the number one seed from the mid-area division, will face No. 2 seed from the southwest division Concord Post 51, in a best -of-3 playoff series. Game 1 is Thursday night at 7 at West Rowan High School.

Showcase baseball

Carson sophomore Michael Morrison and East Rowan sophomore Ike Freeman were selected to the All-Tournament team at the 15U World Wood Bat Association Perfect Game National Championship in East Cobb, Ga.

Beach volleyball

Emily and Anna Messisco won first place in doubles play in the Carolina Jr. Beach Tour in a tournament in Wilmington on June 22.
The Messiscos took the silver in the Dream in Gold Tournament in Pottstown, Pa. and won first place in the Charlotte AAU District Championship.
The Messiscos will head to Cincinnati this weekend for a stop on the National Tour.

Hole in One

Craig Argo hit a hole-in-one at The Club at Irish Creek on Hole 15 April 9.
Argo used a 6-iron on the 168-yard hole. Witnesses were Phil Hubbard and Rock Pickard.

Cavalier football camp

Cavalier Football Camp at North Rowan will be held July 29-31. Camp is for rising third-eighth graders and lasts from 9 a.m. until noon.
The cost is $40 for three days or $15 per day. Campers will receive a T-shirt. Water and drinks will be provided.

Carson girls camp

Carson girls basketball camps will be held in July.
A camp for elementary school girls will be held July 8-11 from 4-7.
A camp for middle school girls will be held July 15-18 from 4-7.
The gym will open at 3:30 p.m. for both camps. The cost of either camp is $50. That includes a T-shirt and camp insurance.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy boys basketball camp will be held July 8-11 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The camp is for rising 4th-9th graders.
Coaches Antwaun Thompson and Ken Clarke will be instructing the camp.
Both coaches have many years of experience that will help them to create a program where campers will have a lot of fun while further developing their skills.
The cost of the camp is $25 per day or $80 for the full camp week.

North Middle

Football workouts for summer conditioning at North Rowan Middle begin Tuesday, July 9, from 5:30-7:30.
Workouts are for rising seventh and graders who plan to play football. Meet at the locker room at 5:30.
T-shirts, shots, cleats and tennis shoes will be needed.
Workouts will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7:30.
If you already have your paperwork and a copy of a current physical, bring it on July 9. If not, all paperwork will be available.

Hitting/Fielding Camp

Former East Rowan and Rowan Legion stars Trey Holmes (Appalachian State) and Justin Roland (Charlotte) are conducting a hitting and fielding camp at Granite Quarry’s Staton Field on July 15-18.
The camp is for ages 6-14 and is from 9-12 daily. The cost is $50. Staffers will be East players and former and current college players.

Livingstone tennis

The Livingstone’s women’s tennis team will be hosting its first tennis clinic, August 7-9 at the Livingstone William Trent Athletic Complex tennis courts.
The purpose of the clinic is to develop youth skills ages 7-17 so they can pursue and achieve their highest levels for competing in tennis.
The John Daniels Principles of Tennis Clinic will be managed by the Women’s Tennis Team with Head Coach Gwen Jackson in charge of the three-day event. The clinic will culminate with a tournament competition for the camp’s championship at the City Park Courts in Salisbury on the last day of the clinic.
