South Rowan’s Davis Richards shot 73-71 — 144 and finished tied for third out of 106 competitors in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship held at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Burlington’s William Register led qualifying with a 138 two-day total. Ben Schlottman of Advance shot 142 for second place.
Michael Childress shot 83-83 — 166 and tied for 70th.
Richards, Register, Schlottman, Hilton Head’s Tennoshin Ogawa and Gastonia’s Harrison Frye advanced to compete in the U.S. Junior Amateur. Frye won a playoff after tying for fifth.
The 66th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be held July 20-27 at Martis Camp in Truckee, Calif.

Rowan County’s game at Stanly was rained out on Wednesday night.
With the regular season ending Friday and both teams already scheduled to play Friday, the teams will need to play a doubleheader today.
They’ll play at Montgomery Park in Albemarle at 1 p.m. and at Newman Park at 7 p.m.
Rowan is 5-0 in the division with three games left to play, while Stanly, which lost at Southern Rowan, is 4-1. Southern Rowan is 4-2.
• The Mooresville Moors won 12-2 against the Mooresville Legends to finish 6-0 in league play in the Southwestern Division.
Keep in mind that the second round of the Legion playoffs will include Southwest vs. Southeast matchups.
The Moors got two hits each from Seth Hubbard, Michael Elwell, Michael Knight and Paul Blankley.
Blake Best pitched a complete game.
Kane Sutton homered for the Legends. Sutton and Sean Parlee had two hits each.

South Rowan Junior Legion was rained out on Wednesday against Davidson County.
The game will be made up at Holt-Moffitt Field in Lexington on Sunday.
South Rowan plays at home today at 4 p.m. against Rowan County and is home Saturday against South Iredell.

The Region 6 baseball team, which included Carson’s Colton Laws, won the gold medal in the State Games.
South Rowan graduate Eric Tyler played on the North Carolina all-star team of graduating seniors that beat South Carolina 6-5 in the State Games.

East Rowan pitcher Sydney Poole, third baseman Steffi Sides and shortstop Jesse Rummage were named to the 3A all-district team by the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association.
Gray Stone’s Katie Kepley, Jordan Orick and Sydney Freeman were 1A all-district picks.
Davie’s Morgan Hendrix, Caroline Miller, Abby Daniels, Sarah Myers and Kristina Parrish were named to the 4A all-district team.

New York Mets closer Bobby Parnell picked up his 13th save on Wednesday with a scoreless ninth inning in a 3-0 win against the Chicago White Sox.

Casey Kalenwosky’s two-run single in the ninth lifted the Rome Braves to a 7-6 win against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Wednesday in Rome, Ga.
Rome took advantage of five Kannapolis errors.
Micah Johnson stole two bases for the Intimidators, bumping his season total to 60, which leads the minor leagues.
Johnson also leads the minors in runs scored and crossed the plate for the 71st time.
The Intimidators return home tonight to take on the Greenville Drive, a Boston farm club.
• L.A. Dodgers prospect Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) had three RBIs on Tuesday and is batting .395 with 15 RBIs in his last 10 games.
• Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits for Birmingham on Wednesday and is 7-for-14 in his last four games. He raised his batting average to .270.

Catawba outfielder Blake Houston (South Rowan), pitchers Nick Lomascolo and Ryan McClintock and first baseman Chris Dula were named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association College Division All-State team.
Dula was a first-team pick, while the other Indians made the second team.
Dula, the 25th-round pick of the Texas Rangers, has signed for an undisclosed figure and is expected to leave Monday to join the Rangers’ rookie league team in Arizona.
The SAC Triple Crown winner as a junior, Dula was drafted as a pitcher. He throws mid-90s but played first base his junior season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery.
Lomascolo, a 34th-round draft pick, is pitching for the Johnson City Cardinals and won his first pro decision.

The Country Club of Salisbury Senior Interclub team lost 19-17 to Bermuda Run.

The East Rowan Diamond Sports 8-under all-stars open play in the WNC Cal Ripken Area 3 play tonight at East Bend against Yadkin County.
Team members are Logan Dyer, Tyler Goodman, Brandon Gullett, Nathan Hayworth, Cobb Hightower, Blake Hill, Whitt Hoesman, Jordan King, Chance Mako, Cameron Padgett, Morgan Padgett, Kamden Ridgell, Jaden Sprinkle, Jackson Trexler and Dylan Valley.
Brian Hightower is the head coach. Assistants are Chris Mako and Tommy Goodman.

Salisbury Parks and Recreationa Department is accepting registrations for teams for its adult softball leagues.
