Rising senior Brielle Blaire has verbally committed to Virginia Tech’s women’s basketball program.
Virginia Tech is a program that’s been interested in Blaire since she was a Knox eighth-grader.
Prospectnation.com ranks Blaire 49th among all prep players in the Class of 2014 and 17th among forwards.
BlueStar Basketball ranks Blaire 56th nationally.
Fullcourt Basketball ranks Blaire 51st nationally.
Blaire has been an All-CCC player at Salisbury for three seasons. She was conference player of the year in 2013 and runner-up for that honor in 2013.
Blaire averaged 11.8 points per game as a freshman on a 2A state-title team,
She averaged 22.3 points as a sophomore and 24.1 as a junior.
Blaire has produced two of the five 600-point seasons in Salisbury history, with Shayla Fields accounting for the other three.
Blaire’s 24.1 average as a junior was the third-highest in school history, behind only Fields’ 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.

The MLB draft starts today, and one area player is expected to be selected in the first round.
Bandys right-hander Hunter Harvey, who has been playing for the Mooresville Moors American Legion team, is expected to hear his name called in the second half of the first round.
The 6-foot-3 Harvey was 15-0 in his last two high school seasons, with 222 strikeouts in 1082/3 innings. He was 8-0 as a senior with an ERA of 0.38. Harvey has been clocked at 97 mph. He’s the son of former major leaguer Bryan Harvey.
• Concord won 15-5 against the Mooresville Legends on Tuesday. Daniel Roman had three hits and two RBIs for Concord. Devon Watts and Jake Carty had three hits each for the Legends.

Kannapolis Intimidators Micah Johnson and Jason Coats were named to play in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game that will be held in Lakewood. N.J., on June 18.
Johnson, a second baseman, is batting .316 with 30 RBIs, although his most notable stat is 47 stolen bases in 53 games. Coats, an outfielder, is batting .282 with a team-high 32 RBIs.
• The Kannapolis Intimidators swept Hagerstown 6-2 and 11-0 in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
In the seven-inning nightcap, Kannapolis hurlers Braulio Ortiz, Adam Lopez and Joe Dvorsky combined on a no-hitter.
Josh Richmond drove in three runs in the opener and homered in the nightcap.

In the Toshiba/CBI Carolina Open being held at The Club at Irish Creek, Roy Dixon (Salisbury) has shot 67-71 — 138 and is tied for second at 4-under, six shots back of leader Spencer Lawson.
Andrew Morgan (South Rowan) has shot 70-74 — 144 and is tied for 19th.
Alex Nianouris (Salisbury) shot 74-74 — 148 and is tied for 35th.
The 54-hole tournament concludes today.
• Fifty-five GARS members played a Captain’s Choice tournament at Corbin Hills.
The team of Jim Harris, Ross Howard, Winsten Mahaffey and Tom Talbert with minus-13.
Second-place team with a minus-9 was Harold Caudill, Glenn Deal, Dick Hatoway and Art Hattaway.
The team of Jay Boyce, Dale Cobb, Larry Fowler and Larry Perrell shot minus-8 and tied the team of John Cress, Butch Grambow, Les Loman and Don Martin for third.
Dick Hatoway birdied No. 16 and eagled No. 17.

Wingate’s Kelli Ferguson (NW Cabarrus) was named to the Capital One Academic All-America team. She has a singles career record of 57-24, a doubles record of 50-32, and played on three SAC championship teams.

Carson’s 4th annual Little Dribblers Camp for 4-year-old boys and girls through rising first-graders will be held at Carson on July 15-17.
Camp hours are 9-11 a.m. The gym opens at 8:30. The cost is $35 and includes instruction, insurance and a camp T-shirt.

Lexington High is establishing a Hall of Fame and will induct its first class on Sept. 26.

A benefit softball game beween the police and fire units of China Grove and Landis will be played on Thursday, June 6, at South Rowan High.
The game starts at 6 p.m. The home run derby is at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $2 and will benefit the academic letter program at South. Police and fire equipment will be on display before the game. Sponsors include Dale’s Sporting Goods and Creative Graphics.

West Rowan beat South Iredell 10-8 on Wednesday.
