SALISBURY —Wearing flapper dresses and dapper suits, Salisbury High School juniors led students through a 1920s museum on Friday morning.
Students in Meagan Robinson’s and Kim Etters’ Honors English II classes decorated a hallway and several classrooms for the project.
The classes have been studying “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which is set during the 1920s. Students created some props for the hallway that represented scenes from the novel, including the prominent symbol of a billboard with bespectacled eyes.
In one classroom, they pulled desks together to create stations representing different chapters of the book. Students at each station explained to visitors what happened in that chapter or chapters, as well as the meaning of the items on their desks.
Students taught Charleston dance steps and presented 1920s fashions in two more rooms.
Another room featured a construction paper bathtub, which students explained was often used to make “bathtub gin” or moonshine during Prohibition. But in keeping with the laws of the decade, the drinks in their cocktail glasses were non-alcoholic.
