Jerusalem Baptist

SPENCER — Jerusalem Baptist Church and the Annie Duke Missionary Society is celebrating Mother’s Day at 6 p.m. today in the fellowship hall of the church.
All mothers and women of the church will be honored with an evening of entertainment, food and fun. Those mothers will receive a gift.
Attire is casual. Men of the church will serve as hosts by catering to the women.

At The Cross retreat

Moore’s Chapel AME Zion

Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church will honor five ladies as “Pearls of Moore’s Chapel” during its Mother’s Day observance at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Those to be honored for their dedicated service to the church will be Mrs. Gwendolyn T. Ellis, Mrs. Sallie E. Holt, Mrs. Mary G. Leazer, Mrs. Lillie M. Nelson and Mrs. Katherine M. Smith.
Rev. Carolyn D. Bratton, pastor, will deliver a special Mother’s Day message and the Men’s Choir will sing.

St. John’s Lutheran benefit concert
The St. John’s Lutheran Church Men’s Chorus will present its 18th annual spring concert, “Sing with the Spirit” at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, in the sanctuary of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St.
The Inner Voices, an auditioned ensemble of chorus members, will also perform, as well as the two St. John’s adult handbell groups, The Luther Ringers and The Classic Ringers,.
Accompanist is Janie R. Rollins. Instrumentalists include Michelle Trivette, saxophone; Daniel Trivette, percussion; and Rob Durocher, minister of music, organist.
Soloists will be David Agner, Paul Cline, John Corriher, Ray Gandy, Frank Goodnight, Randy Overcash, Gordon Senter, Mitch Siegel, Norman Sloop, Wayne Thonen, Neal Wilkinson and Carter Woolly.
During this program, the audience will be invited to contribute to a special offering for The Community Care Clinic, which offers medical and dental care to adults in need. This benefit performance is free and open to the public.

Gethsemane Missionary Baptist
Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, 719 S. Caldwell St., will present a Mother’s Day service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday with guest speaker the Rev. Ruby A. Steele, associate minister of Gethsemane.
Steele is also superintendent of Sunday School, vice-president of District 3, Group 2 of the Rowan Missionary and past president of Rowan Salisbury Missionary Union.
She holds a degree in sociology, a master’s degree in guidance and counseling, and a Master of Biblical Studies from Hood Theological Seminary.
Steele is currently a guidance counselor at Salisbury High School.

First Calvary Baptist

A special tribute to the mothers of First Calvary Baptist Church, 400 S. Long St., will be held Sunday.
Mrs. Deborah Bradshaw Bamby will be the 11 a.m. speaker and the contemporary choir will provide music.
A member of First Calvary, Bamby is a Bible study teacher, chairwoman of Missionary Group 135 and past president of the General Missionary Circle. She supports Church Women United and is active in the Women’s Baptist Association.
Missionary Unit No. 6 (Augusta White Missionary Group) and the Young Adult Missionary Group are sponsors of the event.

Mount Zion UCC

CHINA GROVE — A Mother’s Day service of candles and carnations during the 11 a.m. service at Mount Zion United Church of Christ will include music by the handbell choir and the Mount Zion UCC children’s choir.

Mount Tabor UMC

A celebration of mothers will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.
All women in attendance will receive a small gift of gratitude for their role in influencing and caring for the children in their life. Guest preacher for the service is Dr. Doug Hume.
Mount Tabor is located just north of Ellis Park on Old Mocksville Road.

Orbison at St. Matthews

St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 9275 Bringle Ferry Road, presents Dean Orbison as their May Second Sunday music performer at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Family Life Center.
Orbison has performed with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, the Rockingham Symphony Orchestra, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and the Jacksonville Chorale.
Under his direction at East Rowan High School, the honors chorus consistently receives superior ratings at state festivals in the highest level of music competition and have been named Grand Champion Choir in national festivals for nine consecutive years.
Orbison has won many awards and is, in addition, a founding member of the southern gospel quartet Brothers 4.

Prayer and Healing

Worldwide, people are discovering more each day about the ways prayer can make huge differences in life.
International speaker Mark Swinney will present a talk on prayer and healing at 7 p.m. Monday. at the Christian Science Church, 1825 Statesville Blvd.
Swinney’s ideas are based on the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, and as discussed in science and health with “Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy.
Swinney has devoted more than 25 years both to praying with people and empowering people to pray effectively for themselves.
A prolific author with more than 250 published articles, he has traveled much of the world speaking, and is known for his honesty, humor and candid style.
Swinney is a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. He travels from his home in Sandia Park, New Mexico.

Mt. Calvary Holy Church

Mt. Calvary Holy Church, Salisbury, will continue pre-anniversary services to honor the 41 years of spiritual excellence of pastor Bishop Harvey Rice Sr. at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The speaker will be pastor Nasby Mills Jr. and the Progressive Outreach Ministry from Salisbury.

Community Fun Day

Christ United Methodist Church, 3401 Mooresville Road, will be hosting Community Fun Day 2013 next from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18. It will be a day of bounce houses, food, games and fellowship.
Live entertainment will be provided by Scottie Howard, Redeemed, Y Wonder Singers, Anointed Brothers in Christ Mime Ministry and Monique & Friends.
The event is open to the public.

Gospel tent singing

STATESVILLE — Hams Grove Baptist Church will host an afternoon of gospel tent singing starting at noon Saturday, May 18.
Singers and groups the will perform include New Grace, the Gospel Plowboys, Gospel Friends, Misty River Band, Don Johnson, Mountain Ridge and the Iredell Ramblers.
Bring lawn chairs and picnic basket and enjoy a music-filled afternoon.
