Salisbury falls to Red Devils

Salisbury’s tennis team ended the team portion of its season with a 5-4 loss at Newton-Conover in the second round of the 2A dual team state playoffs on Wednesday.
“Tough match against an extremely good team,” Salisbury coach Chris Stroupe said.
Salisbury won two singles matches. Spencer Storey won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 against Dan Avis, while Hunter Carlton won 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 6 against Gordon Wepner.
Storey-Carlton won 8-5 in doubles against Avis-Wepner. Salisbury’s Brock Overcash-Clint Comadoll won the No. 1 doubles match when Newton-Conover retired due to injury and illness.
But the Red Devils won 1-through-4 singles, with Tyler Barrymore topping Overcash 6-1, 6-1; Ryen Reid beat Comadoll 6-0, 6-3; John Tate handling Chris Derrick 6-0, 6-0, and Jesse Gill stopping David Derrick 6-3, 6-4.
Reid-Tate won 10-0 against the Derricks in a doubles match.
Salisbury finished 14-4.
The Overcash-Comadoll doubles team will play in the individual state championships this weekend.
Sacred Heart shot 155 and won the conference tournament at Rock Barn.
Michael Childress led the Dolphins. He shot 1-under 35. Other scores for Sacred Heart were posted by Alex Antosek (38), Will Casmus (41), Adam Habeeb (41), Joseph Harrison (43) and Eric Turnbull (50). Childress. Antosek, Casmus, Habeeb and Harrison were all-conference.
Other team scores were Concordia (178), Hickory Christian (183) and Salisbury Academy (212).
• Erwin shot 157 and won a match at Warrior against China Grove (175), Corriher-Lipe (177), Southeast (186), Knox (189) and West Rowan Middle (195).
Nick Lyerly led the Eagles with a 33, and Bryson Sprinkle shot 34,
Corriher-Lipe’s Parker Chavis shot 39 for third place.
In the Rowan County Middle School Conference boys soccer tournament, Southeast won 7-0 against Corriher-Lipe. Raunel Vasquez scored six goals. Daniel Carrillo had one.
West Rowan Middle won 6-1 against Erwin. Knox won 4-2 in overtime against China Grove.
Erwin won 5-2 against Knox, with two doubles matches halted by rain.
Simon Post and Boothe Pfaff won singles matches for Knox (10-4).
• West Rowan Middle won 5-2 against China Grove.
Singles winners for the Bulldogs were Jessie Baker, Daniel Lopez and Nick Ferguson. Doubles winners were Baker’Lopez and Melchor/Ferguson.
Tickets are on sale for the West Rowan vs. Davie alumni football game.
Tickets are $10 at the West school office. The game is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in Mount Ulla.
The annual Rotary Tennis Tournament will be held May 17-19 at Salisbury City Park.
Registration deadline is May 12.
