A “5 Woman Show” will be held at Rail Walk Studios and Gallery in the Rail Walk Arts District.
The exhibit featuring artists Ingrid Erickson, Harriet Hoover, Anna Kenar, Ashley Pierce and Jenn Selby opens today. It will be on display through March 30.
The women are showing new work including sculpture, mixed media, drawings, photographs and prints.
An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Ingrid Erickson, the education coordinator at Waterworks Visual Art Center, is a mixed media artist specializing in cut paper.
She received a bachelor’s degree in art history with a minor in studio art from Middlebury College in Middlebury Vt., in 2003 and a K-12 studio art certification in 2008 from the Maine College of Art in Portland.
Harriet Hoover of Greensboro will be showing a series of new sculptures and drawings.
Hoover studied landscape architecture at The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2001, and holds a bachelor’s degree in textile technology and fiber arts focus from North Carolina State University.
Hoover will earn her master’s in studio art from UNC-Greensboro later this year.
Hoover says that her “practice is largely process based, with a sincere exploration of materiality and its relationship to place, space, and memory.”
Anna Kenar will be showing a series of lithographs.
She holds an master’s degree in printmaking from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill.
Born and raised in Poland, Kenar has shown her lithographs and prints in Japan, Canada, Poland, and the United States.
“My work derives from an interest in a personal transformation that takes place due to the occurrence of emotional and physical struggle…” Kenar said. “Through exaggerating and abstracting body-related forms I place an emphasis on the uneasiness of the emotional and bodily deterioration.”
Ashley Pierce has been an instructor of visual art at Catwaba College since 2011.
She holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in visual art from East Carolina University.
She has created logo designs for a variety of North Carolina businesses and organizations. Her new line of wearable “Art Objects” is displayed at Emerge Gallery and Art Center in Greenville.
Jenn Selby is a Salisbury-based photographer whose “art practice is project-based, requiring a great deal of research, process, and time.”
She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from North Carolina State University and a master’s in studio art from The University of the Arts London and a doctorate in student philosophy, aesthetics and art theory from the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts in Portland, Maine.
Selby is acting assistant program chair of fine arts and a full-time instructor at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
She is also a lecturer in art history at The University of North Carolina Greensboro.
