Salisbury Fire Department to host 5K Saturday

The fifth annual Salisbury Fire Department St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday morning, March 9.
The race location is the J.F. Hurley YMCA on Jake Alexander Boulevard. Start time for the run/walk is 9 a.m.
Proceeds will benefit the restoration of a 1941 American LaFrance ladder truck that was formerly used by the department. By reacquiring the truck, firefighters and volunteers hope to eventually have it available for parades and other public events. For the first time, the truck will be at the race.
Fire truck commemorative awards will be given to males and females in 14 age groups, as well as to the top three overall and top three masters. All participants get a dri-fit shirt. Refreshments are available for everyone after the event.
Terry Smith is race director.
“We had 205 participants last year, and of course we are hoping for more this year,” said Smith, battalion chief for the fire department and Salisbury fire marshal. “Walkers are very welcome. We will have lots of firefighters supporting and participating in the race. Saturday would be a great time to come out and meet them.”
Registration continues through the week on www.sportoften.com. More information and a printed race brochure is available at www.salisburyrowanrunners.org . Smith can reached at tsmit@salisburync.gov
